What housil said about the cardboard reminds me of when my national guard unit was still issued MCIs; of course I was fortunate as a crew-member of an M-113 ambulance track, my crew-mates and I had plenty of room to store our cans, but then when we were dis-mounted (more often than not, surprisingly) we had to find places on our gear to stuff the cans where we could get to them but they were not in the way.

They still do it today, they didn“t changed this much.
