California fire crews make gains
Posted: 03:54 PM ET

(CNN) — California turned a big corner over the weekend, with firefighters boosting to 84 percent the portion of the state’s wildfires now contained, federal and state emergency officials said Monday.

But even with that progress — made possible by favorable weather — much work still needs to be done, Henry Renteria, director of the California Office of Emergency Services, said during a telephone news conference. “We have damage assessment teams that are waiting to be deployed to see what kind of impact these fires have had on the state,” he said

Another concern for federal officials is their ability to respond to fires elsewhere, with 80 percent of federal fire resources now operating in California.
