Well this seems as good a place as any to start my forum presence, what with there being another 'strine here already.
I also remember spacefood sticks in lunchboxes as a kid (although here in Oz we only ever had chocolate or caramel flavour, no peanut butter and choc). From memory the caramel was always slightly gritty...god knows what was in it, semi-processed authentic meteor bits or something.
But I can confirm that space food sticks and tang are both still available in most mainstream Aussie shops. Will buy, photograph and taste test 'em for the site shortly.
Oh and the packaging of the one in the photo seems to be a special edition. From memory the packages are normally much plainer with a simple image of a guy on a BMX bike jumping over the moon? Black, white and red for chocolate; black, white and orange for caramel.

Crikey I used to love these things as a kid...I'll have to get a box next time I go shopping! Chocolate ones - I never really went for the caramel.

It looks like the energy bars in the French survival ration of the 80's (I thing they were called "ration alimentaire de complément de survie"). They were wrapped in aluminium foil and tasted like a vanilla or chocolate flavoured toffee.
We preferred a good sandwich but the kids really loved the space food style and it was always possible to swap those da... bars for one or two beer cans
