Don't get me wrong about the pound cakes - they're the best desserts out there. It's just that of the five or six different types, I like the poppyseed versions the least.

I have a few cans of the MCI pound cakes, too. I haven't opened one lately - but did you check out the MCI fruitcake page:

That one was 26 years old and was still good...as long as you liked fruitcake, that is.

Along those same lines, Kman, I have found that the contents of B-1, B-2, and B-3 unit cans are still perfectly edible. The caveat being that whatever the crackers share the can with (whether it is cocoa beverage powder or candy disks), they will invariably taste just like their co-habitant. By the same token, I have found that the B unit candy disks are still very tasty - even going back to the mid-70's.

I look forward to your review of Saturday lunch. For the record, I will be eating a British 24 hour ration pack (my first) all day on Sunday. I will post my findings in the Internation Rations forum.

You know, Tom, I had a similar thought about the contents of those B units. Except my thought was that whatever is in those cans soaks up the taste of tin - especially the crackers. Those things are still nice and crispy but after eating one, you feel like you need to pick bits of metal out of your teeth.

And rodger that on the candy disks. I was surprised at how good they still were. Heck...I still have a few of those things sitting in a cupboard in the kitchen...I might have to try one again.

It's kind of funny you should mention eating a British ration pack tomorrow...I was just contemplating that myself. You see, I just finished off the last MRE in this case and I was pondering whether I should just grab a random MRE laying around (there's a Pasta Alfredo that's been looking at me in the garage) or if I should try my first British ration. The jury is still out...I'm kind of tempted to try the British ration...but then that shoots my whole theory of "a week of *MREs*".

LOL, about the candy or whatever food being in the MCI can and tasting like tin...LMFAO, had to pick out the metal from your teeth...ROFLMAO. I could see that happening. Just the other night I opened up the one and only MCI that I have and was just fondling the cans in my hand reminsicing about that late 70's recollection of when my father brought home a bunch of then fresh MCI's from the army base and I was in heaven eating up all the candy from the MCIs. I thought, man I don't dare open up one of these cans as something like an alien being like ALIEN will jump out and try to eat me instead....

Day 6: Friday dinner: #18 - Cajun Rice with Beans and Sausage

Here's another MRE that I haven't tried before. And also another MRE playing the name game. While the MRE bag is titled "Cajun Rice w/Beans and Sausage", the entree is titled, "Rice with Beans and Cajun Style Sausage". And here I was thinking was I was going to be eating some cajun rice but no...it's just regular rice with cajun sausage...how misleading!

I wouldn't say I cheated with this MRE but a couple of hours before dinner, I was getting a little hungry and since I knew this was the last MRE in the box and I knew what would be in it, I cracked it open early and dug out the "cheddar cheese pretzels"...also known as "Combos". These things were perfect snacking food.

Once dinner time proper rolled around, I started off the meal with some cheese spread and crackers. Wow...when you get cheese, you really get cheese! The entree took 10-12 minutes to heat up and once it was done, I cracked it open to take some pictures.

Now here's one thing you can't see from the picture below - that's me holding the entree in my hand...that's the *incredibly hot* entree searing my hand...and that's me crying "it burns! it burns!" and I take each picture. It take a few seconds for the camera to autofocus and snap the picture and I know I can't move the entree around or it'll go out of focus. So the flash goes off, I drop the entree on the counter, shake my hand until burning stops...then repeat it a few more times to make sure I get a good pic.

Cajun Rice with Beans and Sausage


The entree itself was pretty good...or at least I'm sure it would have been good if I hadn't gone a little too overboard with the tobasco sauce. Had I been smart, I would have just used the little 1/8 ounce bottle in the accessory pack. But I decided to break out my full-sized bottle and I put in what I thought would be a decent amount. Wow was I wrong...way too much tobasco - it kind of overpowered any other flavor that might have been in there. But one thing I did notice (while my mouth was burning) that you can't tell from the picture was that the "sausage" in the entree wasn't the nice round type of sausage I was expecting but was instead nicely cubed into 1/4 inch pieces. The red beans and rice was normal...but the "sausage" had all the markings of the usual MRE mystery meat.

Dessert was the famous "Chocolate Sports Bar". They couldn't call it a PowerBar since they were obviously too cheap to include a *real* PowerBar so they just put together their own mash of high-carb chocolately goodness, pressed it out into a bar shape, and wrapped it up. You can see the result below.

I don't know about you, but when I first saw that bar, the first thing I thought was, "that looks like what they saw floating in the pool in Caddyshack". Yuck. Fortunately, the taste wasn't so bad.

Notice anything strange? That's right...two packages of toilet paper! I wonder...was that an accident or are they trying to tell you something about the Cajun Rice with Beans and Sausage?

And speaking of toilet paper, I know you've seen those nice little packs...but have you ever opened one up and attempted to use it? Here it is in all its (unused) glory:

Hmmm, I must disagree with you on this one Kman, have you had the fudge brownie? That is the best dessert I have had so far. It has little chunks of chocolate or chocolate chips in them. The regular poundcake would have to be second on my list. Great idea about putting that cocoa on the poundcake Kman...again... that needs to be put in the Tips and Tricks forum that I hope you put up before I turn 80 yrs old...LOL!

I like the cajun and rice and sausage one a lot I must say. Since I hate power bars I always skip eating that. I think I have about ten of those lying around somewhere that I need to do something with, any suggestions? Float them around in a public pool somewhere? LOL! I have never had a mutant accessory pack. Kman, you should sell that on ebay for $1,000 and call it a limited edition pack, some moron would probably buy it.

TIP TO KMAN: try setting the hot MRE down on the table to take your pic...it will result in less burnt hand...LOL! You don't have to suffer for our sake bro, we love you too much...
