It appears to be a quality issue. From one of the articles,
"-In the "fused sterilized cheese," the protein content was exceeded , "said Deputy Chief Military Prosecutor of Russia Lieutenant-General Andrei Nikulishchin . - And the oils used in canned food did not meet the official requirements "On the safety of milk and dairy products". In "Pate tender" and "Kasha buckwheat with beef" found the DNA of chicken and locust bean gum. In "Beef stewed high-grade" there was a lack of protein and excess of table salt and fat content, and the mass fraction of meat products was 10% instead of the prescribed 48%."

Seems like it was a bunch of little things here or there that just tipped them over the edge.

Why you no like fat, comrade? Meat good. Everything in Russian ration meat-related: meat pâté, meat fat with beef chunk, meat with buckwheat, orange mystery vegetable paste (that remind you of meat) and strange cheese that remind you you really want more meat.

The Russian rations certainly do not last long either.
Got 3x Emercoms they expired in March. Almost 100% inedible even to my standards.
Only $26 shipped but now I see why. (Seller is on ebay he does ship fast though)
And Ukrainian rations along with Kazakh. Also can get pretty rough on the quality side. One time i recently had a can of tushonka from a Kazakh. Maybe 10% meat, 90% fat.
I did just get some of those new ones from MRE Zone i am very interested to see the difference from that old style MVD.

Hey scrbblr, it's nice you registered here to share this with us. The article didn't say food isn't tasty, but unhealthy. In any case you are robbed of quality and eat who knows what.

MRE's are fun food for us, collectibles, and some times, even food for emergencies... But a soldier should expect and be given more from the rations. If you where to eat a poorly prepared ration or even a contaminated one it could have a severe impact on his performance, and let's be honest, the last thing you want is a soldier shitting himself because of too much fat on their food or a platoon with gastroenteritis...
I'm glad they changed them, better for their corps
Although, if I had one ration of those, I'd still eat it...
