Re: The 2008 Sloppy Joe MRE meal and another FRH failure
All of this is talk of old failing FRHs is baffling to me. I bought a huge (over 100) pile of 1990s ones off Ebay in 1999 (Y2K cooking if the power failed!) and have been using them over the last 15 years without a single failure. Some of them take longer (half hour or so) to get hot but they all eventually work. Is a slow reaction being counted as a fail by most? Guess it depends on your own time frame but for me they've all been camping/festival "eat whenever" situations so an extra half hour hasn't been an issue.

Apocalypse-- I will have to admit that I have always punted after about 10 minutes. I don't think I've ever gone ahead and just let an FRH sit for a half an hour at a time... I may have to give them a second shot.
I'm off on a rafting trip next weekend and I may take a couple of the old ones along just to give them a last chance. Nothing ventured, .... eh?

More time is better. I try to wait 20-30 minutes. If not, then 15 minutes.

Definitely give them more time. I can only imagine the fun when an FRH is tossed and then balloons up full of hydrogen in someone's trash.
