Now that I think about it, a lot of us got started in this hobby due to a nearby military base, or Military exercises.
I grew up next to a Army camp (Camp Cook) that turned into an Air Force base ( Vandenberg Air Force Base).
C Rats were a treat.
I haven't seen any MRE's, but the Air Force doesn't usually feed troops in the field.

Not to the extent that the Army does, but they do--it depends on the unit type. Any flying wings/squadrons are going to have full kitchen facilities with them pretty much anywhere they go. CE, SF, SOC, etc. will be roughing it a lot more often.

Us Marines have been here for exersices since the 1950s
and when i was a kid they used to be in the fields close to my home
so the way to start eating and collecting mres and gear was short
