bushnut - Glad to hear they fixed it, but yeah - if you hadn't opened one and just trusted the outside date you wouldn't have known for years and that's not ok.

cavguy - yeah, I went through a few from 2007 and 2008 this past summer and they were just fine. I still have a few 08, but I keep them cold and dark so they should be fine for a while longer. As a post shtf item they only make sense if you plan to feed a larger group or know you have a way of keeping opened food fresh since it would take a few days for one person to eat a whole UGR on meal at a time.

From what bushnut experienced, I was reminded of the way I look at this whole idea; if I'm buying MREs or UGRs/tray-packs for a shtf/rainy decade situation, I would be less inclined to trust ebay or an army surplus store because there is really no way to know where the items came from or how long they may have been sitting in a less-than-ideal environment. After all, the last thing you want to have to deal with is food poisoning during a shtf situation where there's no hospital to go to.

If your worried about sthf scenario then definitely look at TheEpicenter.com, they have very fresh stuff to sell. I, for one, have had no problem with there items. Ultimately its up to the buyer to make sure they store them properly.

Very good advice treesuit, thanks very much. I'll feel alot better knowing that the company I ultimately do business with will ship me items that were made within a couple years or even more recently.
