I still am amazed at all of the stuff there is in the MREs over the past few years, and the only real issue I've seen was with the dairy shake recalls. Back when we still ate the MCIs, one thing myself and my ambulance track crew-mates would do is mix the peanut butter and cocoa powder together with a bit of water and stir it until it was like a paste and we called it pudding but it was nothing like what there is now.

Nawt, do you mean puddings or dairy shakesNawt wrote:...They are kinda nice, good tasting. I do like 'm myself as well.
I have a few chocolate and strawberry ones...

The "peanut butter/cocoa mix" is also used in that SUPREME COMMAND CHOCOLATE NUTCAKE recipe (out of THE UNOFFICIAL MRE RECIPE BOOKLET edition 1985), I have still not tried it but I guess it would taste great (if you do not care the amount of caloriesrationtin440 wrote:… Back when we still ate the MCIs, one thing myself and my ambulance track crew-mates would do is mix the peanut butter and cocoa powder together with a bit of water and stir it until it was like a paste and we called it pudding …

Nawt, are you referring to the dairy shakes? With translation I know there can be a bit of a disconnect, but the pudding is something different - about halfway between a dairy shake and a gelatin (not that there is any army gelatin, I'm just trying to reference something common for comparison). I haven't ever seen a strawberry pudding and am pretty sure they don't exist yet.
If you are talking about the shakes - good thinking with the milk instead of water! I bet they taste much nicer that way

Hi Guys,
indeed. You're right. the strawberry is dairyshake indeed. I guess I spoke to soon, sorry for that.
They got mixed with the chocolate puddings in the cardboardbox, I just checked to make sure.
@mreheater: nice recipe. That peanut butter / chocolate mix sounds yummy. should give it a try. But as you said, calorywise it's a bit of a 'gutbomb'

hi all,
it's a little off topic but I prepared the peanutbutter-chocolate mix. Sorry no pictures, because I didn't have an old chocolate nut cake I just made the mix.
Ingredients as listed, peanut butter (pd. 5304) choco bev pwdr ( pd 9131) and crackers to hold it together ( pd 9208), sugar.
Well, since I wasn't to keen on using water I warmed up the peanutbutter blended in the sugar and a whole envelope of the choco pwdr rather than half an envelope. Still I used a titty bit of water. Allthough the warm peanutbutter was 'gouhy' enough to get it all nicely mixed. The reason I did use the whole envelope of choco pwdr was that the peanutbutter smelled really... flat / stale, kinda "yuk". Hoping it would mask the taste somewhat.
Well the mixture turned out really nice, (texture wise) topped the cackers with it and it tasted.....like it smelled... stale peanuts! So not a real succes since I had that taste in my mouth prety much all day long. For future daredevils
use some newer peanutbutter.
With that and if one would have a chocolate nut cake, I but it's yummie. The peanut and chocolate taste goes good together.
chrs, Nawt.

I'm not sure if/how this would have contributed to the mix, but as I recall, the MCI "canned" peanut butter seemed more oily than the MRE peanut butter, so it did taste a bit greasy but did not seem to make any difference in how the mix stayed together.
