Comparing web gear
Re: Comparing web gear
Housil helped me with a Bundeswehr webbing kit some time ago, I've thinking I use it instead of backpack in hiking or light camping. But i've found an excellent article, written by a norwegian UN instructor, about lightening soldiers load, specifically for snipers. So, after reading, I think I'll use Bundeswehr webgear as base for a carry sistem on hunts in Romania.
BTW, if you're interested, the article can be found here, called "Snipers in Africa":

'cuz hunting ain't catch and release...
Re: Comparing web gear
the reason i asked about the ally waterbottles ,housil,is because the uk,and nearly everybody else has went to plastic bottles and yet as they fight a war in hot clims they spend money on things like this http://www.bcbin.com/products/product_d ... =Hydration but if they looked back,my old field instructor insisted we buy old us army waterbottle(canteen)holders as they were lined with felt, and the reason for that if you read old us field manuals is you wet the holder (felt ) and as it dries on a hot day it causes evaporative cooling.some times it helps to go back to go forward
the only place i could get quality metal waterbottles before now was in the us and because the new ones are hand made stainless they are $50 each
thanks housil

Never saw such a cooling device beforesodjer wrote:the reason i asked about the ally waterbottles ,housil,is because the uk,and nearly everybody else has went to plastic bottles and yet as they fight a war in hot clims they spend money on things like this http://www.bcbin.com/products/product_d ... =Hydration

The description say´s: "Drinking warm water is totally ineffective to cool the body..."
Being a paramedic, I think that´s wrong. They never recommend drink any cold beverages to cool down your body. That´s what sweat is for.
Wearing too much clothing and doing too much body works (like in combat) your body can overheat and stopps from sweating. We have to deal a lot of such emergencies in summertime and we NEVER give e.g. cool i.v. on purpose. We heat the Ringers to the regular bodys temp and give you maybe an ice pack at your neck if your body temps >40°C.
Cold drinks cause your body to heat them up by producing "heat".
I can remember the very first one I had (as a kid back in the 1980th) was lined with a "fur" inside. This kept my tea warm inside and kept the water cool like the way you said.but if they looked back,my old field instructor insisted we buy old us army waterbottle(canteen)holders as they were lined with felt, and the reason for that if you read old us field manuals is you wet the holder (felt ) and as it dries on a hot day it causes evaporative cooling.some times it helps to go back to go forward![]()

Bundeswehr use the aluminium bottles still as they are more sturdy than plastic and last longer.

Re: Comparing web gear
I'm glad you replied to this topic sodjer, because I was wondering what you thought of the UK web gear and what advantages/dis-advantages it has over the Bundeswehr and U.S. gear. I recently bought some British OD web pouches which were marked as being for the L-1A1 magazines, there were two stitched together and then two larger ones marked "Remploy" which were for "misc. use," according to the marking on the price tag.

Re: Comparing web gear
What you mentioned about cooling down the body housil made me think of the NBC training we used to do where we wore the suits no matter how hot and humid it was, and there would always be guys who either drank too much caffeine-ated coffee or soda and once they were suited up and masked and doing strenuous activity, it was only a little time and "crash"-----"medic! we have a man down!" never failed, we'd get to him, assess his condition, and sure enough the conversation would be, "are you drinking water soldier?" "well yeah, but I have trouble drinking just plain water." "ok, how much soda and coffee have you drank today?" the medic would ask, and without missing a beat, the reply would 9 times out of 10 be, "you mean this morning or this afternoon?" So that was usually followed by one of the medics (usually the senior medic) having to radio in to the company HQ section to suspend the exercise and then gather everyone together to give them a class on proper hydration in the field, you know, maybe not have that 4th cup of coffee until training is done for the day!!

Re: Comparing web gear
I hope this does not go too much OT...

I guess everybody knows that drinking coffee makes you need to go pee (like beer). The coffee inhibits a hormone (ADH) that slows down your kidneys function. Once your body runs out of liquid from sweating and peeing too much, he can´t cool down and starts to overheat (seriously).rationtin440 wrote:have that 4th cup of coffee until training is done for the day!!![]()

Re: Comparing web gear
hey rationtin 440.there s not a lot to say about differences now ,because apart from the cammo and the fastening systems they are close,my son is home at present, and if i can set it up ill take some photos of his webbing, as to your pouches ,if its nylon its early plce 90 gear it was withdrawn early because of irr problems, this kit is quite rare now.if it is cotton webbing it is 1958 pattern, older but good, remploy was a government run disability orginisation(not nesassarily veteran)they made and repaired webbing resprayed ammo can and made things like kippex ect,as to my oops sub thread
i was always taught to try at take onboard water at as close to body temp as you can(winter or summer)

Re: Comparing web gear
In hot climates I always drink water at "room temperature" not cold, just cool.
Even having a plastic water bottle is beter than those camelbacks.
I use mostly the crusader Type 58 water bottle system and it works great. Recently fount a 2qt US bladder canteen in a thriftstore and got a special forces canteen cover made by Safariland whic is MOLLE compatible. Is made of a thick material that reminds me of the old furry canteen covers od the 80's and keeps the water nice and cool in a hot day.
The use of metal is mostly because of the fad given by these "survivalists " on TV.

Re: Comparing web gear
bypah, i am the same ,i cant take to camelbaks,i get a sore throat and drinking is a chore.i think it is meant to allow troops to be constantly sipping, but coming into a rest stop ,sitting down and half emptying a waterbottle feels better.i like the crusader mug and kit,but i have dumped it in favour of my jetboil, that ,a spoon and a mug this mug is the best bit of kit i have used in a long time.squaddies call it ammo pouch cup,and i thought it was a gimick, because i have used most and they dont work, have a plastic tast and break easy.My son got me one and it is my constant companion,i can make a coffee at 06.00 and its still warn at midday.i took mine to florida this summer and used it for cold drinks and because it stainless easy clean and no after taste.

What a funny coincidence...sodjer wrote: this mug is the best bit of kit i have used in a long time.squaddies call it ammo pouch cup,and i thought it was a gimick, because i have used most and they dont work, have a plastic tast and break easy.My son got me one and it is my constant companion,i can make a coffee at 06.00 and its still warn at midday.i took mine to florida this summer and used it for cold drinks and because it stainless easy clean and no after taste.
Just yesterday I got a parcel from Afghanistan of an Ebay auction I won from a soldier offering an "UK/US issued thermal mug"

It´s exactly the same you mentioned
