Supper time, today the last box in this ration
2010 Italian Module B Red (part 4) Supper

- This box is heavier than the breakfast box but the same size, also lighter and smaller than the lunch box

- A look inside

- Rice Salad, Beef Medallions in Gelatin, Chocolate Energy Bar, Crackers, Coffee, Sugar and Plastic cutlery

- Main Entrees

- I will start with the rice salad

- It is watery, smells of cooked white rice

- Carrots Peas Meat of some kind, and black olives

- I don't like black olives, and their flavor is pretty strong in this dish, the rice cant compete. Other than that its a little bland, rice is soft but not mush carrots and peas have some textures and flavor but all i can taste is the black olives so not a winner in my book

Chocolate energy bar was next

- This was very good, a mix between a brownie and a fluffy layer of cake texture wise very soft and chewy, but not crumbly or dry in any way, nice rich chocolate flavor i think there were some nuts of some kind also. This was better than the one for breakfast which was very good!
This has been one of my favorite rations so far lets see how the last can is

- Smells meaty

- They mean it when they say gelatin, that stuff is solid and its not even cold today

- I set three beef medallions free from the gelatin

- Close up, well marbled

- I went or the last pack of crackers to try this with, they were all smashed except for one

- Its Good! the texture is a very soft salami style. Taste is of summer sausage mixed with corned beef hash. Even the gelatin had a nice beef flavor i ate every bit
This was an amazing ration, every bit was high quality. There is enough food for a day, not in each box, but you can easily take from the others as you get hungry.
They give you all coffee, its very good coffee, but a sport drink flavor or even simple fruit flavor would be nice.
Its heavy but there isn't too much to field strip other than boxes and maybe the extra stoves if you are issued a large number of these.
I am glad i had a chance to actually get my hands on one at all, and this was fresh and everything was perfect so it was even better
I just hope i can find some more in the future....

A bit late, but better late than never ....
Re: the "water purification tabs" shown as attached, according to
the company's page on what appears to be the product (Italian), they appear to be more like "disinfecting tabs". You apparently put a tablet in 1.25 litres of water to make a disinfecting/cleaning liquid - even the little envelope in the photo says "Fizzing dissolving tablets for the antiseptic washing of fruits and vegetables". Even the online instructions call for rinsing with clean water before eating the fruit/veg you washed.
No WONDER it didn't taste so good - you may have made the equivalent of bleach!
No instructions on the reverse side of the packet, either? Odd, indeed.
Belated thanks for sharing!

Food in gelatin,
called "Sülze" or "in Aspik" , is a very common dish over here in Europa. Usually it´s eaten cold so it´s a nice dish in hot summer or for dinner.
The gelatin is made from broth (beef, fish etc.) depends to the "inlay".
Thank you the review of that Italian ration.

Awesome review and pics, Nnf!

A couple questions occured to me (one is more an observation): Do you know if the Italians have an equivalent to the British 10-man Ration system or the U.S. Unitized Group Ration/Tray Packs? I have not seen any references to either system being adopted by Italy in the Italian Rations page here , but I'm just curious. The observation I made is that the Italian Rations don't appear to contain any "diet" or "sugar-free" items like what is occasionally found in U.S. MREs. Since this seems to me to be limited to American MREs, perhaps the designers of other countries' rations got hit with a heavy dose of common sense, and realized that troops eating rations would likely be engaged in strenuous/heavily physical activity, so any sugar and carbs would not likely stay in their bodies long enough to cause any issues. I'm sure we all recall the revelation a couple years back that U.S. troops were losing weight even while consuming 3 complete MREs per day.

My apologies for wandering off topic towards the end of that last post, also the U.S. troops were in Iraq and Afghanistan----sorry for any confusion.
