Good point dirtbag about every marine being a rifleman first! Once upon a time there was brief discussion by the PTB of requiring every member of the U.S. Army, no matter what the MOS, to successfully complete the MOS 11B combat infantry specialist course prior to being assigned to their chosen MOS training. Not sure whatever came of it but I think the Marines definately have the right idea.

My apologies for wandering off subject here, but for sheer brutally realistic and physically challenging training, it's hard to beat the SPETSNAZ groups of the former Soviet Union. They alledgedly had/have training methods which would be prohibited in NATO/U.S. forces. I actually met a veteran of the SPETS a few years ago at a shot-show in Nevada and we discussed our military service. He explained to me that SPETS were trained on "correct" and "incorrect/prohibited" targets, and he told me that field hospitals and any other med units were prohibited.

There is always a risk of being killed.
But, being a cook is a " 2nd line" function, and isn't extremely hazardous.
I wouldn't worry to much if I were you, if he'll be killed in a foreign country, it will be a IED or a mortar attack. And you'll need a lot of bad luck to get that to happen.
