A t least it didn't ended in the hands of a collector like mine did... I collect things from the soviet bloc and the cold war era.Soviet-russian the better.

I'll try to get one for your collection, if you want. This one means very much for me, is the only thing I kept from my "old" military days in the Romanian Marines, along an AKM cleaning kit. So, I'll loan it to Cracker, or I'll use it and give my Victorinox compass to Cracker to use.

That would be nice. By the way i saw a compass like yours, an IOR made in bucaresti on ebay for $50.
My yellow Turist-2 soviet compass I got it from Bulgaria.....the soviet military one I got it in the US. Both are fuctional.The interesting thing is that the civilian one was made in the Soviet Union yet the cardinal point are in german. "ost=east".The he military one is in full cyrillic.

I also got me this which I use when going on a trip or camping.an US Army Tritium Compass by Cammenga.

To be totally honest, navigation with a compass is new to me. I have only minor experience with it, back in the good old days with the scouts.. (>10 years ago) and I don't have a clue how to use them.. I'm only used to use the sun along with a clock as an "sort off" compass.. But for real navigation I use a wrist GPS, which I'm not taking to Romania because I'm afraid to lose it (it's my father's).

Teach him well....
Cracker, don to rely on the GPS technology like most it can fail plus is controlled by the goverments and it can be eliminated or modified any time. learn the use of a compass,big corporations and goverments can't change mother nature
....for now!

Well.. can't change nature? BP is doing a hell of a job....

Following the sun is enough to "escape" when your lost. But not that accurate for real navigation..
And about the GPS.. that's so so true, during some actions the US goverment shut down GPS for civil purposes in several areas.

But the fact is that we don't have large forrests in the Netherlands, so getting lost isn't that much of a problem.
If you keep walking straight in the netherlands you will find buildings within hours.
The same goes for Belgium and Germany (Germany also only has few big forrests left)

I can't rely on electronic things. I have an GPS, but what is if batteries are dead? It's a useless piece of trash...

(And yeap, there are after final course last year, 19 km on foot ))
