I am a heartbeat away from buying some RCW's. I think they'll make good hiking food since they are packaged relatively dry. But in a non-hydrated urban environ I think MRE's would be best, right?

Anyway am I off the mark in saying that if an RCW is subject to room temperature it might last seven or even TEN years?

Hi Kat.I definitely think an RCW will last 7-10 years. Probably longer. While RCWs can be fun to go through and try out, if you're looking at this as food for hiking, you might want to consider buying some fresh Mountain House packages. The new "Pro-Pak" entrees, for examples are the same as what the military uses and they should only run you about $5-6 each. I guess it'll all depend on how much you pay for the RCWs as to which one is a better deal.

The Mountain House entrees are a good idea but then again you don't have the drink mix, spoon, accessory pack, etc that can be had for maybe a dollar more per meal.

I did however throw a Mountain House Mexican Rice and Chicken meal in the freezer before RCW's made it to Ebay.
