So what is this 'test' you guys are talking about?

Basically, to even be considered for the armed forces you have to take the ASVAB, the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery. It's a series of questions/"mini tests" in a booklet that they use to score you on a scale of basically how much you know, which somewhat goes to how smart you are. I remember a part on mechanical things, how they work, where the force is applied, that sort of deal, I remember a quick math session where you have like 3 minutes to answer 100 questions, but they're like 9x9, 14/2, simple, but you have to answer them fast. The rest as I can recall were just general questions. Once you get your scores back, the one that really matters is your general score, it dictates what jobs you can choose from, the higher the better. I'm sure if your general was low but your mechanical was 100 there might be a variation in available jobs, but you get the idea. You have to be a certain height/weight proportion also, which is sorta BS and be able to do basic physical fitness, like 10 pushups, 10 pullups and run 1/4 mile or something.

My score was 12/20 on the French version: I answered a bit more than the first half of the test then, all the beer I drank the previous night started to produce its unpleasant effects and I spent the rest of the test time in the toilets...
The final evaluation by the military psychiatrist was “mild mental deficiency with associated troubles > ok for the NCO training platoon”

The ASVB was before my time, we had the 'basic battery test'. No studying before, no warning. They rousted us up at 3 AM. and you were testing until 6 PM...
As I understand it, the ASVB is a Vocational test, what you may be suitable for.
The BBT was more of an IQ test, it had ~ 10 tests, and combinations of those determined your suitability for certain specialities, as well as your IQ.
The funny thing is that the score (and IQ) to be an Officer is lower than most of the technical specialities....

What was it Huey Lewis and The News sang in their song "Walking on a Thin Line"? Something to the affect of `You're never the same once you've been under fire...... I especially miss the tight nit camaraderie. Those who don't serve in the Armed Forces will never understand the bond between soldiers (none of this "Warfighter this, Warfighter that" crap for me). Yiiiiick, Barf!

Cracks me up when the Air Force has a ' Warrior ' day, and everybody has to dig out their Cammies (but they don't force them to eat a MRE)
