Maybe water purification tabs? Do the Americans find a fresh, pure spring or a grocery on every battlefield? (the second option I’d bet!)

I too considered iodine tabs as a sensible addition to the MRE. Heck the beverage bag can be used to collect still and running water. There has been much progress in water treatment especially in the wake of many recent natural disasters including Hurricane Katrina.
Katadyn, manufacture of various water purification systems, has developed Micropur water purification tablets. These tablets come in packets that ideally can be removed one at a time. According to Katadyn, Micropur kills all viruses and bacteriological cysts including Cryptosporidium. http://www.katadyn.com/
Another option is a direct carbon based filter system for soldiers. LifeSaver Systems manufactures the LifeSaver bottle. These collect and drink bottles provide protection against viruses, cysts and filters out parasites according to their website. I'd like to see the new packets of gelled alcohol (supposed gelled hand sanitizer is the same thing) for heating warm drinks after the entree heaters are expended. I recently got my first MRE with a secondary drink bag, not sure what I was supposed to put in it as I got no warm drinks in the bag and no coffee.

as for water purification. when in the field we are issued purification tablets. well at least the unit that i was in did. so for me i had no use to have them in the mre.

They had them in the old Sea Rats, well why not bring them back to the New 2008 Mre's Is a cigarette? There are alot of Slodiers that smoke, and cant get to a base or an AAFES Conssion stand?, Also put in Wipes for after eating.

I've seen the cigarettes in the French rations, the cigarettes distributed to the soldiers every month (even to those who didn't smoke including me), and then, no more, finished, verboten, blahblahblah cancer, blahblahblah politicaly incorrect, blahblahblah, blahblahblah
I strongly doubt any government is willing NOW to reintroduce the cigarettes in their army rations.
