Since testing is a continuous part of MRE development, part of the research includes soldier testing and recommendations. If Natick says, troops requested a particular entree, it’s safe to say that’s what they wanted and are going to receive it.

It might be safe to say it, but I’ve pondered this for a long time, and I don’t believe it is quite that cut and dried.

There are too many entrees over the years that were almost universally reviled. There’s just no way that some of them passed any sort of voting process. Or more likely, it was rigged after some fashion. The flip side of that too, there were some genuinely excellent entrees that have been discontinued.

My suspicion is that there is at least a little bit of jiggery-pokery going on with some of the selections, government contracts, and perhaps politics or more specifically politicians. They do have cost constraints, and in the end the low bidder is going to get the nod.
