Hammelburg military camp 2023, unlucky ending

Post by housil » Fri May 26, 2023 5:03 pm

Also this year we had "Camp Hammelburg" again

First dinner after arrival and quick set up our tents etc.

My five days supply, a case of 2009 MREs with darkened TTI sticker.

My first dinner

Nothing wrong with it after 14 years and a too warm/long storage. Still edible. :D

A slipped vertebral disc I had from a last week related working "accident", gave me a sleepless and very painful night.

I had to cancle the camp the very next morning, packing all my equipment and driving all the way back home with a "numb" leg. At the next night at 3am, I had to call an ambulance due to too severe pain. I ended up in university hospital with a now paralyzed leg.

A surgery became necessary to relive the spinal nerve

So after one week in hospital I´m back home now

still having a numb and paralyzed leg and wait for getting better/well the next 6-12 weeks.

Wish me luck.

Holy smokes Housil. I did not see that coming! I thought maybe you'd get sick from one of those rations eventually or something
Mate, wish you all the best and hope you're feeling more like it soon! Fingers crossed you get the feeling and movement back in that leg.

Hey Housil, I hope your leg heals up quickly and back to normal. That's a disappointing turn of events during your Hammelburg trip. It's always so cool to see each year you share it here too. Wishing next year's is a better one for you out there.

Dang! Good thing you knew the tell tale signs and got the help you needed. Heal fast, good buddy.
All the best, Gents.

As an orthopaedic surgeon….ouch! You were super smart to recognize and get treatment!! How is your recovery coming along?

I´m going to rehab next week what is 4 weeks after the surgery. My leg is till numb and paralyzed (L3/4) but it´s getting better every day by ~1%. I´m hoping (and praying) for a fully recovery to keep my job (as a paramedic) and I made plans going mountain bike into the Italian Alps in August.
