Hi folks,
it's been a long time since i wrote something in the forum. But today a have a question for you. I opened an US MRE today. It was a 2017 menu 17 Pork Sausage Patty Maple Flavored. The date code on the MRE bag is 7163. While i was putting all components out i was looking for a FRH and than i realized that i already had it in hands but in a different looking. It turned out that the FRH came in an extra pouch. That is the first time i've seen that. Is this something new or what is it all about? Does somebody know more about it.

Tried lots of foreign rations from Europe and Northern America. Want to try Asian and South American rations

So initially I thought they use to do this somewhere around 2010 but you are right: there is no doubt that this Menu 17 Maple Sausage Patty is a 2017.
I then thought it was old stock that they threw in there until i found an article about the purchase of TrueTech Inc and Innotech Inc in July 2014. They started a new divivision of Luxfer called “Luxfer Magtech” so there is absolutely no doubt that this was made post July 2014
As to the why, I’m not sure

A note from MREDepot mentioning why they might have did this back in the day:

Thank for the fast answer Smitty. Just read the article. Very interesting.
Now i'm wondering if anyone else had such a FRH in a US Mre

I’ve seen them occasionally. I’ll have to stop the next time I find one so I can document what it was packaged with.

My first idea was not 2017 but 2007...
Thx for your research!

Real interesting stuff smitty! Nice work. I figured it had to be some sort of additional deterrent against accidentally starting an FRH. Interesting little piece of history.
