French RCIR ration
French RCIR ration
Got my first French ration yesterday-menu 7
chilli con carne
salmon with rice&veg
mackrel in sauce for snack
rice pudding with caramel for dessert
some chocolate and fruit bars
but like most Euro rations-NO BREKFAST APART FROM COFFEE&HOT CHOCOLATE!!
No surprise most French people are thin!!
Nice looking food but small portions!
I'll let you know what it tastes like when I open it.

I have one single French RCIR but haven't gotten around to cracking it open yet to sample.
My impression of the "breakfast" parts of the French, British, and German rations is that it's not so much a complete entree like lunch or dinner but more of a biscuit/fruit bar type of meal. That works great for someone like me who doesn't usually eat a big breakfast, but I can see how it'd be a tough adjustment for someone not used to eating like that.
Take some pictures when you finally start taste testing!

Yes, we german usually eat for breakfast a lot of meat, cheese and marmelade, maybe some Chocolate Hazelnut spread. peannut butter is not so popular in germany, but i like it
. to this we eat bread, buns, maybe some croissant
sometimes we eat some eggs, scramled ore boiled.
also you can get many different kind of sweet pieces from the baker, some cake and so on.
there are people who prefer the sweet breakfast, and the ones who like the solid breakfast.
as i hat the breakfast with my familiy today, i ve eaten bread with meat and cheese, my wife is the sweeter one, she had cake and marmelade.
as we have a oficial holiday today we had breakfast the whole family together. talking and eating no time limit. in my family the breakfast is very important for the social cohesion. if we have time to celabrate the breakfast, we do together with friends, brother and sister, grandpa an grandma, sister in law etc.
but dont think, that we are a typical german family, everyone do this in his own way.
hope i could give you al ittle view to german habits.
in german epas the meat and marmeldae, together with the bread and cookies are inside for the breakfast
bye

Yes, the breakfast that you described in Holland is similar to what I had in Germany, but on the occasions that I was there it was as a visitor in a hotel. jubifahrer's description is probably more accurate as to what a German native may have in their home. During my visits though, I got the impression that Germans are much more health concious about what they eat these days than Americans.
I've never been a big fan of beans for breakfast, though I suspect it may be a product of WWII; my mother-in-law was British and I know she liked baked beans on toast. As for British breakfasts that I've had, they've generally been bacon, egg (one), tomato, and toast. Occasionally rashers may be substituted for bacon. Certainly lighter than the typical American breakfast.

MCI-is the German Breakfast like the Dutch I have eaten in Holland?
Lots of cold meats&cheese's, fried or boiled eggs, breads etc?
Maybe its all to do with climate?
Us Brits,Germans,Dutch etc like to eat good large breakfasts,
whereas countries like Spain,Italy etc like nothing more than coffee, a cigarette and maybe a small pastry??
Having said that the Turks, a hot country do eat a quite substantial breakfast, Im sure you Germans have come across Turkish Breakfast menus?

I suspect it has more to do with the culture and the industries that have evolved within those countries. A hearty breakfast is generally more common amongst those peoples who do a great deal of manual labor like farming where the level of energy is necessary. While that may also be where the large portions of food got its origins in the farm regions of the U.S., I'm not sure why Americans still eat such huge portions compared to other people in other lands (I'm not excluding myself
) but it seems to be a continuation of the tradition. That's one of my joys of visiting areas in the Midwestern portion of the U.S., I don't have to worry about not getting enough to eat!
Actually I think the mid-day meal (lunch/dinner) is the main meal of the day in some of the countries that you mentioned where a light breakfast is the order of the day, and the evening meal (dinner/supper) is a bit lighter.

In Spain Breakfast is negligable, coffee/hot chocolate and maybe a pastry.
In the daytime Tapas and small snacks are eaten whereas the night time meal eaten from 11PM onwards(believe it or not)is huge, involving many courses and much wine.
Thats why the Spanish have the siesta in the midday.
The Italians ditto with Breakfast although they eat a huge lunch then sleep it off.
The evening meal in Italy sometimes involves up to five courses!!(with lots of wine).
This is reflected in these nations rations.
