Is the outer part cardboard or is it paper? It looks like paper.

Interesting. A few years ago, I purchased a reproduction from Todd Hogan and was disappointed to see that he had wrapped them in paper. I didn't know they were ever wrapped in paper when produced back in the 1940s. Guess I'm not so dissatisfied now.

I also have a K ration, but I just can't bring myself to open it. I'm almost sure the inside is compromised as I can hear bits of sand-like material in it when I lightly shake it.

Yours looks almost to good to be true, I would expect much more aging, etc. if it was legit.
