"Micro" Take-alongs...
"Micro" Take-alongs...
By now, most of you are aware that my camping and MRE addictions have a serious tendency of running into each other in the aisles down at the dollar store while both of them are searching for ways to minimize what gets carried out into the woods. I am always looking to cut weight, but still carry along enough of those little touches that make the trip enjoyable.
It should come as no surprise that "great minds think alike", and that others would be on the same path.
Lion Heart is a woman who is planning out her northbound hike on the Appalachian Trail this coming spring. She will be blogging the trip over on the Appalachian Trials website and she was nice enough to let me share this post of hers on my own blog at https://moosenutfalls.wordpress.com/
I wanted to pass it on to you guys you as well >> http://appalachiantrials.com/reducing-pack-weight/
I especially like her trick with the dropper bottles. Since my eye surgery, I am using up Visine like it's going out of style, and those little, flattened o.5ml squeeze bottles will be perfect for Worcestershire sauce, hot sauces, and oils. The dropper tips pop right off for re-filling, and if the sauce is a little too thick I can always open up the end with a nail.
Great stuff Lionheart! Thanks!

Re: "Micro" Take-alongs...
Thank you for sharing Lion Heart's brilliant eye drop bottle trick for storing condiments/oils/etc!
I am going to use this trick for hot sauce and also, I like throwing Apple Cider Vinegar on certain things like chicken - it always adds a nice zest and helps one assimilate proteins more efficiently so now I can put that in a bottle 1/20th the size of the one I lug along.
This is a HUGE help for cutting down on weight and cubic inch space in one's pack, allowing a broader variety of seasonings and oils to bring along.
Also folks, ratattoo's blog is AMAZING - you gotta check out all the cool tips and knowledge he has compiled on that blog.

If you are lazy like me, pouches and packs of things in small quantities can be had from http://www.minimus.biz/ I have ordered a number of times in the last few years and as long as you spend $20, free shipping in the US.

They have some good deals, hot sauces, laundry soap, drink mixes etc. Hope you like it.

It was interesting to notice that the "minimus" site had the Bridgeford "MRE" sandwiches in the breakfast selections.
I only browse for a couple of minutes, but it's definitely a link worth having.
Thx

Very good post for me. The toothpaste in the tiny container is a great idea. The big tube takes up space and you only need a little on the trail

"Down at the Dollar Store"... Seems like that's how I start every post.Norton wrote:Very good post for me. The toothpaste in the tiny container is a great idea. The big tube takes up space and you only need a little on the trail
Anyway, I did find some micro toothbrushes. One or two use, 4 inches long, rubberized bristles, and a toothpick at the backend... Already loaded with a dose of toothpaste. Individually wrapped.
Pretty slick. I think they were three or four for a dollar. {mebbe Colgate brand?]

That's a great site ...thank you

I tend to pilfer sauces and such when I see them. My favor pub has excellent single serve BBQ and Tomato sauce, and one place I used to work had my favourite brand of jam and peanut butter in single serves in boxes. I know most of you guys will gag, but they also had the Aussie staple of Vegemite too. Great for short trips and space saving.
