whats the best mre from the 2004 menus?
I just got a case each of a and b of the 2004 (expire in 2007) mres, which ones are the best to hold on to and eat and which ones should I give away... ?
My friends want to sample them, but I want to keep the best ones for me...

Looking at the menus here:
http://www.mreinfo.com/mre-menu-2004.html
these are my personal favorites:
Chili w/ Macaroni
Cheese Tortellini
Spaghetti w/ Meat Sauce
Meatloaf w/ Gravy
Actually, I like them all (except for the Country Captain Chicken!). But if I had to choose the MREs lowest on the list of what I like, they'd be:
CCC
Pasta w/ Vegetables
Grilled Chicken Breast
Beef Patty

Taste
Is in the taste of the beholder. We all must make our own judgements from experiance. What taste like heaven to 1 man may taste like crap to another man. I'd kill for a grilled beefsteak with mushrooms right now. LOL. I agree with Kman though, about the CC Chicken. I can eat it if was starved for 3 days. I disagree with Kman about the grilled patties. I can do wonders with those slabs of processed meat. Hey Kman, I still have yet to find the elusive Pork Rib/Clam chowder single. All those I got last year, and every A had the Jamaican, even if the outer said Boneless Pork Chop. I guess I'm going to have to order some from 1 of the online single item companies.

My faves are:
Chili and Macaroni
Manicotti w/Vegetables
Chicken w/Noodles
Western Beans
Mexican Macaroni & Cheese
Kman, I have two Jamaican Pork Chop meals from last year. Haven't tried them yet, but your comments have caught my interest. I recently bought a case of 2004 A and the the pork chop is in fact inside the pouch. Does anyone know if menu 20 Spaghetti w/Meat Sauce really has two wheat breads in it, or is it a typo? I liked the rice and bean burritos and was sorry to see them go.

2 soft-tacks in 1 meal
The only 1's I ever saw with that was the Grilled beef 3.2. I think I mentioned before, I thought it was to make mini CB using the Cheese pack. Was'nt good that way. I never saw 2 breads in the later Spagetti's. I'd prefer the crackers in those, since they always have cheese. I'm putting one on the EbY. Link it if you have time, Kman. Thanks.
Here is DIRTYDAVE'S take on the Complete Menu 2004, I have eaten one case of each and lived to tell, well, almost all of each case, do read or don't if you are faint of heart.
MRE XXIII (2004)
01 - Beef Steak w/ Mushroom Gravy - awesome
02 - Pork Rib - crap, well to tell the truth I have not tried it but pork sux
03 - Beef Ravioli - awesome
04 - Country Captain Chicken - total crap, not fit for dog consumption
05 - Grilled Chicken Breast - eat only if nothing else available, bit bland
06 - Chicken/ Thai Sauce - I got the shits for two weeks straight from a Thai Rest one time, I EAT NOTHING THAT SAYS THAI ON IT.
07 - Chicken w/ Salsa - I call this the Mexican express. It is an incredible meal, the jalapeno cheese spread and the mexican rice and the tabasco...LOOK OUT MA! CLEAR THE TOILET, I AM ABOUT TO 'SPOLDE!
08 - Beef Patty - same patty that you find in the meatloaf, beef stew and other patty ones here but minus all the gravy and liquid.
09 - Beef Stew - this should be called beef tips, cause that is what it is, excellent meal, had it yesterday actually for lunch....YUMM AYE!
10 - Chili w/ Macaroni - fantastic, but then I am biased for pasta
11 - Pasta w/Vegetables - WARNING WARNING DANGER DANGER. DO NOT EAT THE BROWN STUFF, that was the color of my alfredo sauce, anyone else?
12 - Veggie Burger w/BBQ sauce - Homie don't eat veggie stuff. I love Paul McCartney but he will never make a vegan out of me. Sorry Paul!
13 - Cheese Tortellini - I am a tortellini freak and I love this one. Five stars
14 - Manicotti w/Vegetables - It ain't Olive Garden but do-able
15 - Beef Enchiladas - Mexican Express Part Deux, get the baby wipes ready....here comes DADDY! FLUSH FLUSH FLUSH
16 - Chicken w/ Noodles - do-able
17 - Beef Teriyaki - Homie don't do teriyaki, nagasaki or sukiyaki
18 - Cajun Rice, Beans & Sausage - Can you say DID? Yummm aye!
19 - Roast Beef - More beef tips, good, I like it
20 - Spaghetti w/Meat Sauce - never really got to eat it because it is the fav of my little girl, it is all hers and she gives it a big thumps up!
21 - Chicken Tetrazzini - That's italian...love it!
22 - Jambalaya - those little laboratory shrimp scare me...don't do seafood.
23 - Chicken w/Cavetelli - cavatelli means pasta and yes, its italian!
24 - Meatloaf w/ Gravy - this is a great way to stop solicitors from bothering your house. Throw it under your door mat and watch 'em run away. It will even keep insects, burgulars and mother's in law away! GUARANTEED!

Hey, Kman
Do you think the packers have transitional phases when changing menu/items in meals? The latest date case I got last year was packed May/03, but it did'nt have have the Pork Rib. It had the Jamaican Pork Chop. I think the packers may use up existing stocks of certain items before going to the new menu items. If thats the case, the US menu lists won't be etched in stone. What do you think? Also, what's the difference between the Beef Patty, grilled, and the Hamburger Patty? I've never seen the Hamburger Patty Meal.

I think you're right on the money, DangerousDave - it seems like they use up whatever entrees they have in stock from the previous year before moving on to the new items. I suppose it makes sense - it just makes it difficult for us collectors to find the latest MREs.
As for the difference between the Beef Patty, Grilled and the Hamburger Patty, I'm not sure there is one - I think they like changing the name to make it sound more appetizing. For example, the "Jamaican Porkchop w/ Noodles" use to be called "Porkchop w/ Noodles". And besides, almost anything sounds better than the old "Beefsteak, Chunked and Formed". Yum!
