2015 Lithuanian Ration "Beef Stew" Nr.10

Post by GarrettK » Fri Mar 10, 2017 12:07 am

Bought this off ebay, seen other menu reviews from Youtube and decided to try #10 Beef Stew. It wasn't stored properly after seeing how the dry contents seemed to be either cooked and absorbing moisture. None the less here's pictures of contents and some small descriptions for them

Image

Beef Stew w/Vegetables
Crackers
Hazelnuts
Honey
Vitamin C Lemon Drink
Chocolate Bar
Instant Coffee
FRH
Wet naps
Dry fuel w/matches
Spoon
Zip Tie

Image

The crackers were what I would imagine, Hard. Could be worse.
Image

The Honey was crystallizing but went good with pieces of the crackers above.
Image

(No Tray) Now I wasn't expecting anything gourmet with the stew so I wasn't surprised when it looked like ground food for elderly. Some fat and oil separation around the edges of the bowl.
Image

Regardless of what it looked like the goulash was tasty, there was plenty of seasoning and salt! The vegetables were comprised of Potato, Green Beans and I think Carrots..but they were blended into a puree. The beef was in chunks but very small and mushy, a tier higher than ground beef.

Taste: 7/10 Could use less salt if you ask me.
Texture: 5/10 Really wish the vegetables were atleast chopped instead of pureed.
Tummy Feel: 9/10 Been a good couple of hours and haven't had any issues and it wasn't terrible so overall bretty good!

The Coffee was a tad bit bitter since I only used the sugar included, no creamer. I have had worse in the past though.
Image

Chocolate Bar was as good as they get. Was really surprised, since I have never had MRE chocolate before.
Image

Forgot to picture the Lemonade Drink and the Hazelnuts, the drink mix collected moisture and started to collect inside the package. I wine tasted it since I didn't trust taking a full swig, it tasted like any other sports drink related to gatorade. The nuts were as good as you will get anywhere else, unless they are very very old.

This review is my first and probably one of few I will do but was fun to do regardless. Thanks.

Thanks for the review.

I also purchased this Lithuanian ration menu recently, and tried it out with some friends over a few beers in the garage. I agree that the chocolate was very good, as were the biscuits. My packet of honey wasn't crystallized, which was good, but the hazelnuts were stale (soft) which was not. We all thought the beef stew tasted great. I still have the coffee and drink mix for a letter date.

The crackers in the Lithuanian rations are probably my favorite of any ration cracker/biscuit. The caraway seeds really give them great flavor. I really like their lemon beverage as well.

I'm not a fan of the caraway seeds, I've got a Polish SRG waiting to be reviewed so I'll avoid them as they are in there too, if you want them are welcome to them mate.
I was going to make a set of body armour from them as they are nigh on bullet proof.

I was wondering what those seeds were.

There are no caraway seeds in the ingredients, but there are cumin seeds. I assume that's what we're seeing.

There is a bit of a problem with the translation regarding cumin and caraway from other languages. Cumin and caraway are very similar in some other languages.
I just had this problem myself while recording a review of a Polish ration (not edited or uploaded yet) with the SU-1 biscuits.
Now I got rid of the packaging already so I can't look at it, but I'm pretty sure it said "kminek", which is caraway, when "kmin rzymski" is cumin.
In Swedish it's:
Kummin = Caraway
Spiskummin = Cumin
Not confusing at all :) :P

Having said that, I'm still not 100% it's actually caraway, but if I had to bet on either, that would be it :)

Hahaha no, no confusion whatsoever.
The package I had had both English and Polish ingredients on it, and in English it said Cumin. But I know their taste is rather similar, we have local caraway biscuits made here that taste almost the same

http://sklep.arpol.net.pl/pl/racje-zywn ... -su-1.html

Of course their English page doesn't list the ingredients and google translate is apparently not to be trusted:
https://translate.google.com/#pl/en/Kmi ... %20rzymski.
and
https://translate.google.com/#en/pl/Cumin.%20Caraway.

My vote still goes to caraway :)
Though after reading the article on wikipedia I'm starting to wonder whether the manufacturers themselves actually know what they've put in those biscuits :D
