Greetings...This review is for the rare 24hr Russian mountain Ration that contains the retort pouched entrees instead of the tins. I'd like to thank onepamop for makin it available to the group. It also contains flameless ration heaters aswell as the fuel tab stove. The package was beat up in shipping, but only the crackers and chocolate spread were damaged. This ration has a ton of food for 1 person for 24hrs and weighs over a kilogram! Since there are 5 packs of crackers and 5 chocolate bars, I have divided it into 5 meals. Every soldier has his/her own routine when it comes to chow, so my meal selections are based on my own personal tastes.
Meal 2
Meal 2 consisted of rice porridge with golden raisins, fruit and nut bar, chocolate hazelnut spread with crackers and cherry isotonic drink. The rice porridge was freeze dried and had a sweet/salty taste that was very good and it was very filling. The fruit and nut bar tasted like mostly prunes and nuts and had a texture and flavor that reminded me of a fruit roll up. Quite tasty. The chocolate hazelnut spread I took from another IRP for purposes of this review, as the one included was damaged in shipping. It is as you would expect, consistency of thick cake frosting and very sweet. Spread on the crackers, would definately satisfy any sweet tooth. The cherry drink had a very subtle cherry flavor but was mostly sweet.
Meal 3
Meal 3 consisted of beef barley soup, beef/pork sausage, cheese and crackers, tea with sugar, and a chocolate bar. Another huge meal. The beef barley soup was freeze dried and very good. Small bits of real beef with barley, oats and carrots in a broth with a hint of dill. The sausage tasted like Vienna sausage and went nicely with the cheese and crackers. The tea was a nice strong black tea and there's plenty of sugar. Chocolate bar for dessert.
Main meal 1
Meal 1 consisted of kasha(buckwheat and beef hash), apple butter and crackers, coffee with sugar, and a chocolate bar. Surprisingly, there's no creamer in this ration. The savory kasha and tangy sweet flavor of the apple butter were a perfect combo. Glad I matched these 2 together. The crackers were just ordinary rye, but went well with the meal. The kasha was very tasty, with an almost buttery savory background and the entree was huge. Didn't need any seasoning. The apple butter is delicious, it has a very natural flavor and texture. The coffee was ok, but nothing special. The dark chocolate bars in the IRPs have always been very good, this one was aswell. I thought the meal seemed a little small at first, but I was totally full when finished. Very hearty and satisfying meal to start the day.IRP Mountain Ration Menu 1 insp 5/17

Meal 4
Meal 5 Meal 5 consisted of beef goulash, pork brain pate and crackers, black tea with sugar, and chocolate bar. The goulash had nice pieces of real meat with potatoes in a savory sauce. It was really good but a little bit salty to my taste. The pate was slightly more coarse and milder than the liver pate, but really good. Good strong tea and chocolate for dessert. There is also a chocolate bar and isotonic drink left over for later.
Extras This ration contains a number of accessories including 2 flameless ration heaters, a portable stove with fuel tabs and matches, water purification tablets, daily multivitamin, multi tool, salt and pepper, and spoons and napkins.
Overall I was really impressed with this ration. A ton of food and around 5100 kcal. More than enuff food to feed 2 people for 24 hrs or a comat soldier in harsh conditions . The food seems very homestyle and natural without a lot of preservatives. If you have the opportunity to obtain one of these rations, you won't be disappointed. Thank you for checking out my review, hope you enjoyed it

The beef and wheat porridge has the consistency of oatmeal but a savory flavor of beef and onions; it is really good. The liver pate has a velvety smooth texture and rich bold flavor. It is excellent! Add a chocolate bar for dessert and cherry drink to wash it all down.Meal 5 Meal 5 consisted of beef goulash, pork brain pate and crackers, black tea with sugar, and chocolate bar. The best sources to find them are ebay and greyshop.rushawker71 wrote:That looks like quite a comprehensive meal pack. I must look to get one some time. Good review.
I think some Russian users along with a few located in the US might have some too, but you have to ask around the forums.
Good luck and may your rations stay unspoiled!
