Hi Leeman,
I've been MREn for about twenty years and from what I can tell you the menu year (2006) is for the menus produced during that year.
HOWEVER, one must remember these are produced for the government under government specifications and changes are sometimes made mid-stream in production.
Also, due to the fact there are a couple of different manufacturers all producing for the government, there may be subtle differences in the contents of Case A or Case B. (As in what desserts come with each entree)
Many of the "military MREs" in the marketplace are "factory seconds", meaning something in the production run did not meet specifications.
This IS NOT to say there is a problem with the food quality....it could be an issue with the ink on the packaging, size of interior packaging or a mis-sorted meal in the case, etc etc
(I got this info from a good source in the MRE production biz)
Older MREs will lose color and some "freshness" in the taste but the overall opinion is if the bag is sealed, not swollen or otherwise "looks normal".....the food won't kill you.
I firmly believe folks should keep these shelf stable foods for preparedness and personally, I do. (I also use them for camping, fishing trips etc) I also suggest a rotation of personal stock.
For more info you can find it in my preparedness guide.
Manja, manja....
P.S.- MREs don't compare to a good elk roast or smoked elk....lucky you!
