US MRE - Menu 17
Pork Sausage Patty, Maple Flavored - 2013 DOP

I normally skip over doing reviews on US MREs, but with this particular meal eating the ration out of the pouch is a little easier said than done. That being the case, I wanted to plate it, and what better plate for it than a good old melmac mess hall tray? One thing led to another and I plated all the bits and pieces. It looked so damn good that I decided to take a picture and walk through the meal.

Menu 17 - Pork Sausage Patty, Maple Flavored
Contents:
  • Pork Sausage Patty, Maple Flavored
  • Maple Muffin Top
  • Nut and Raisin Mix
  • Beverage Powder, Orange, Type III
  • Crackers
  • Cheese Spread
  • Coffee, Whitener, Sugar
  • Salt, TP, Matches, Moist Towelette
  • Hot Beverage Bag
  • Spoon
The FRH did its job admirably, and I got to enjoy a nice hot sausage patty. The maple taste wasn't overpowering, and the table syrup was a welcome addition. The nut and raisin mix was still fresh and nutritious, but as always I feel like it could use a lot more raisins.

Orange drink goes great with the sausage. This ration comes with Orange Beverage Powder Type 3. I only used a portion of it for what you can see in the photo, and had enough left over for a second tumbler full. The coffee and maple muffin top were a fantastic pair

The cheese spread was fine and dandy - mixed it up with the roll-between-hands method like I'm starting a fire with a stick (without a bow). My cat loves this stuff; he'll come running from wherever he happens to be in the house to get a bit of cheese whenever I have it. The Jalapeno Cheese Spread is his favorite somehow. Crackers were as fresh as I've ever had them.

I didn't use the salt - nothing in the meal felt like it needed it. The gum starts out pretty good, gets pretty meh pretty quick!

This is sill easily my favorite MRE. I snagged this one from treesuit a little while ago. First one I'd had in a few years at least and it absolutely did not disappoint. Thanks for reading!

Thanks for the review and I agree with you about the patty. Great addition to the meals. They go well with hot field bread if you mix and match.

The tray and cup bring back memories. I love those cups and would not mind having a few here at the house.

Great review, Ruleryak! I love the presentation - that mess hall tray is perfect this particular MRE. If I weren't going to be on the road for 8 hours tomorrow at the buttcrack of dawn, I'd be tempted to crack open that lonely Maple Sausage MRE in my garage and have it for breakfast! It's just kind of difficult eating this one while you're driving. :-)

Oh my gosh, my favorite MRE ever! (my actual favorite DoP menu 4 Maple Patty is 2010 and 2011 but this is close enough!)
Looks like we will be fighting for that menu 4 when we crack open a case one day! Let's arm wrestle for it, or even better - rock, paper, scissors! ;)

Man, this was beautifully presented - your setup is just breathtaking.

You know what is so good? Taking the maple muffin top, maple patty, and a MRE table syrup cramming them into the FRH, and afterwards, mashing it all up into the patty's retort pouch, and going to town! Amazing stuff. :D

Ted likes Jalapeno Cheese Spread!? Dude, I am going to make a custom MRE just for him! ;)

Thanks so much for sharing, man. Beautiful!

Great review and pics! I've got a couple of these menus that I'm saving for camping this spring. They sound really good! :D

Tried one today - had 3/4 of the crackers, half the cheese, binned the table sauce, still got the nut/raisin mix.. not bad.

This one is also amazingly good if you have a left over hashbrowns side. They do a great job of soaking up the delicious sauce. They're even better if you want to take the time to try to give them a little frying/crust in some oil.

And I'll certainly +1 the tossing the muffin-top in the FRH... Like the poundcakes, those are not only good to start with, they are even better when they're heated up.

Like our friend Steve, the only ones of these that I have tried have been the #4's from 6 to 8 years old.... Does the patty come with less juice now, and you use the "table syrup" to dose it?

There's very little juice in the pouch compared to the older versions. I may be crazy, but the patty didn't have quite the same maple kick so I completely douse them in the syrup these days.

I just opened the 2011 version of this one and got the Sausage patty cream gravy, Biscuit, Tabasco sauce , Dehydrated Granola with milk and bananas ,
Raisins Osmotic, Jalapeno Cheese spread, Wheat bread snack (yuck), and tropical punch.

the raisins were interesting they tasted different not different bad but I guess its the way they were made.
I am saving the jalapeno cheese spread.
The Dehydrated granola with milk and bananas is awesome its like eating a granola cereal.
Biscuit and gravy was good the biscuit it self was not bad (it tasted like a biscuit, a flat biscuit at that).
The sausage gravy I really liked because it reminds me of the cafeteria sausage gravy that I had in college.
