Swedish peacekeepers demand additional rations

Post by Big_jo » Fri Apr 10, 2015 11:57 am

Interesting news piece http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-32248799

According to the article the soldiers were barely surviving, starving in fact, on UN issued rations, which were simply inadequate

It's interesting news :D
They need "MORE" of US.
And the taste of UN ration was also miserable...

I am surprised the Swedish Army does not provide their own Field rations to it's forces serving abroad. UN peace keeping mission or not.
In the second world war American forces were sometimes issued British or Australian 24 hour ration or 5 in 1 for short periods.
But these had the same or better Calorie counts than the American counterpart. So the American troop was eating food that was at least the same in Caloric value to his own ration.
Does Sweden issue a 24 hour ration European style or a single MRE type type meal packet for combat operations?

Sweden isn´t a NATO member nor any other alliance member. So usually they are not intend to join any foreign missions like now adays. As the Swiss, Austria etc. and any other "neutral" countries in Europa, they don´t have any own ration as there wasn´t a need for it yet.

At the end of cold war (1989), also Germany has decided to stop making own rations, but when we joined Somalia mission (1993) they reconsidered their decision so they kept making EPas but now not for storage anymore but to be served to the troops in action.

Kiwi dude did a review at Youtube about the current Swedish rations. They are available as single meal but also as a 24 hrs ration.

I watched it and learned a great deal from it. Their rations look be 1st class and have high calorie accessories. Such as the American Bridgeford sandwich. Cannot say about the main course for sure, except it reassembled Mt House meals in many ways.( In fact it seems they ask you to either add to much water) I can assume the Swedes made sure it was up to the task of feeding combat troops .

You would think their quartermasters would send these meals instead of locally bought foodstuffs

MREs and their counterparts aren't intended for protracted feeding, both in terms of cost and palatability, so there'd always be a need for some sort of hot A's. If the UN's claim the daily food ration was 3900 calories, it sounds like the cooking or ingredients (or both) were badly substandard before the Swedes sent their own mess section.

Upgraded Swedish rations from Mali (Africa) as you can see on upper right corner under menu numbers print

Magnus did review on Menu 5 that I wanted to use as a sneak preview until I've seen the difference, in UN there is one additional entree called evening meal, and regular menu 5 is 3600kcal while UN Mali menu 5 is 4800kcal. This is a screenshot from his review for comparison

Maybe that is similar to those sandwiches which are if the FSR packages.

- UPDATE -

I found this picture on a Sweden website:

At least the company logo here is Bridgford or something very similar.

- UPDATE -

In fact I found it in this brochure: http://www.bridgford.com/readytoeat/wp- ... ure-05.pdf
