That looks like a great mess kit, deep sides on the pan and the tray. If you had a canteen cup and Esbit or G.I. canteen cup stove to boil water you would have a nice field set. Very unusual design , really no other kit is square like that kit. Do you plan to cook in the pan or just use it as a eating set. After you cook or heat the meal with other means?

Got the esbit, and 2 canteen cups, just didnt have them at work for the pics. Plan on doing both, cooking and eating out of the plan. Hoping to christen it with a can of corned beef, maybe with some root veg, soon...

That is part of the Crusader system that is the cup that covers the canteen. I guess they use it to transfer any hot liquid made in the metal canteen cup to this one???
I think the cup/mug is insulated, I still cannot think where I bought it, must be an age thing .
Tomorrow I am driving to the Midlands for the Stoneleigh Militaria Fair.

Sorry for not replying sooner, I am OK right now but may PM you in the future. That looks like the best way to drink hot tea, coffee and soup without burning your lips. That is the big drawback with metal canteen cups or traditional camping-ware. It is tough, but burns your lips and gets cold quick.
I should have a Russian IRP and a 1984 Soviet mess kit arriving next month, which will give me a chance to try both out simultaneously. Looking at the mess kit, it does seem to be optimized for the kinds of food typical to Russian meals. They still issue similar foodstuffs to the old Soviet Union, with a lot of fatty canned meats mixed with kasha porridge and stews. Cooking in the field is meant to be done with fuel tablets.
