The food was way better than I expected. All the components were fresh and the maple muffin top was delicious. I thought the packet of pancake syrup was a nice touch. I crammed it into the FRH with the entrée and the coffee. The cheese spread is good, strong and thick. The nuts and raisins mix was quite a larger portion than I expected but truth be told it was about 1 almond, 1 walnut and the rest peanuts.
As a test, I wanted to see just how filling these things would be in an emergency or low/no food situation. I ate my MRE at around 10:30 AM, by 8 PM I still wasn't hungry. No hunger pains, no craving for food, nothing. Of course every mans calorie needs will differ but from my perspective in a real shit hit the fan scenario, I could easily live off one of these a day for a few days if needed.
Back to the coffee for a second... As a coffee addict I was surprised and a little saddened to see that the included coffee wasn't the commercial tube of tasters choice but a plain packet from a random contractor. And looking at the granules inside the packet didn't help much either (think tiny gray colored rocks). But to my surprise the coffee was not horrible! It mixed up nice, dissolved fully and tasted better than some "real" hotel coffee I've had! Anyway I promise in the future to post more complete reviews with pictures and such but just wanted to write about my first MRE experience.
