I see that their basic rations are soup, porridge or some type of canned meat and bread or crackers. Add to that a lot of tea or colored flavored packets to be diluted in water.

I'm currently eating the new MRE-esque ration, having finished the old tray-style one in the past few days. Both seem to be very similar, based around porridge or stew-like canned meals and with a minimum of beverages and accessories. They really do provide the minimum to keep soldiers fighting. It's a massive downgrade in quality (both food and variety) from many other field rations, and I would never willingly purchase and eat these again without a purpose.

The entrees are simply commercial canned foods like barley or buckwheat kasha with beef, liver pate, and sprats in tomato sauce. The only other items you'll get in each meal seem to be crackers, a beverage (coffee, tea, or sweet fruit drink) with sugar, and maybe some ketchup to mix in. When both rations are finished and photographed I'll make a new thread in the review board detailing them.

Am bumping this to add, I found this Ukrainian ration on Ebay (there are quite a few sellers for them, as well as Russian ones, etc) and bought it, and can't read it. That big green bag had 3 little green bags inside it, I'm guessing one is for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Don't know how to type their special characters online. Haven't opened any of those 3 smaller packets yet. Just a heads up, there's a lot of them on ebay.

Edit: what was inside that red can was barley mixed with some meat. The crackers it came with are quite hard (are they called buckwheat?) with a couple packets of honey to spread it on the crackers I suppose. A cleansing tissue, and a coffee mix, and one big packet of sugar or something.

And also above poster chitoryu12, I think barley is good food in itself. I heard it was what the ancient Spartans carry was bag of barley. Why you say it's not as good in nutrition?
