Re: Spanish Combat ration for muslim staff - Lunch A Menu 2
I just snagged a bag of Maple Bacon chips last week. Can't go wrong right? I mean I always combine pork and maple syrup for breakfast, and potatoes go right along with those flavors no problem. The chips however, something was just flat out wrong about them. Each time I'd grab a handful I'd convince myself that they were weird because I'd just had a cigarette or had just eaten something else or whatever, but in the end I'm convinced they're just awful chips. I didn't think I'd ever give anything less than a stellar review to something with Bacon in the name, but alas I cannot recommend that particular flavor of potato chip.rabidwolf wrote:Take for instance a bag of chips I saw today. Lays Cappuccino flavored potato chips. That got a no, something just didn't seem right.

I should say so--especially considering my (albeit limited) understanding of Muslim dietary laws label Squid as Haram, or forbidden. They're only supposed to eat fish which have fins and scales, so most other seafood is out, especially shrimp.RockyRaab wrote:It would seem that the Spanish don't much like Muslims. Memories of the past, perhaps?

The Spanish rations have always seemed very small, and now they're just weird!

Haha, this is the exact meal that I had a problem with! It didn't come out of a rat pack but was purchased locally from some roadside food stall in the Congo. But apparently its just an individual taste thing because my friend I was with nearly licked the can dry, so each to their own I supposecavguy wrote:The Spanish rations also have a squid in ink sauce meal. I love squid but could do without the ink sauce! I bet the squid in oil is "A" ok.
Cappuccino flavoured lays on the other hand, I'd totally give those a go!

Okay in the interests of doing a complete review, here are the rest of the items including the offending tin of squid
So after the plain tasting chick peas, I was left with a tin of squid in oil and a small tub of quince jelly.
First up I tackled the tin of squid, close up of the tin here: After opening I was quite surprise. I was expecting the contents to be a lot darker, such as you would get in a tin of mussels or oysters. Still smelled like ass though. So contents is four calamari tubes and each of those tubes is filled with squid bits. Last I opened up all the various tabs and accessories. I sampled the gum but that was about it. Not brave enough to sample random tablets from what has otherwise been a terrible ration pack. The gum was nothing special either, very bland but still chewy. I didn't bother making up the chicken soup as it smelled a bit funny. The quince jam was fine and the best thing in the rat pack which is not saying much. The hand cleanser is supposed to be an alcohol type gel. It was gel like, but I couldn't detect the smell of an alcohol base.
In the pick, from left to right, 1 tab of gum, 1 tab of 1000mg vitamin C, 2 tabs of glucose, 2 re-hydration tabs and two water purification tabs.
After I finished taking the pictures of the squid I double bagged that sucker and threw it in the garbage. Hopefully I'll get a regular spanish ration sometime that I can enjoy
