I did not want to post this in the MRE topics because it wanders off topic considerably, but the fallout shelter supplies that Bypah posted pics of reminded me there was another Civil Defense survival food for shelters besides the crackers and candy. I believe I mentioned it in another post once upon a time (

). It was basically canned luncheon meat/Spam, but I have talked to friends of my parents who were in the Civil Defense Department in our county back in the 1950s and 1960s, and some of them remember it, but some of them don't. If Bypah or anyone else has any info on this particular food ration please let me know, thanks. I also recall my parents' friends mentioning that some shelters even had C-Rations in addition to the CD stuff, but those were mainly found at state government facilities.

I work for a construction company that has rebuilt apartments and banks built in the early 1960's. When we do our initial inspections I go to the fallout shelters if the sign is still up or look where it was before. I usually get the fallout shelter sign.
But on one trip I found two tins of CD Nabisco crackers dated 2/63
Never found any canned food. I can say this from personal memory. The TV news story noted they were feeding people 1960's dated CD crackers at a Church run Soup Kitchen. This would have been around 1977. Old Men were eating what looked like Tomato Soup with Crackers. The reporter asked if they were still good and the server said yes. Then the camera cut to the men eating the soup and crackers. I opened one of my cans and the crackers were still crispy. I ate one and it tasted very bland.

Yep, massive piles of cracker barrels down in Carlsbad Cavern, Grand Canyon Cavern...
Water too...
Both well off the beaten track, so more than enough for the few that got in if SHTF...
Sit in the dark, eating saltines and drinking sterile water...

What I have seen most of the supplies for these CD public fall out shelters was mostly crackers, glucose pills ( aka candy) and canned water.
That's including the medical supplies and geiger counters and other radio/telecommunication equipment.Never seen any canned meat or other items.
As dirtbag said....sit in the dark eating crackers and water...
