new Ukrainian ration

Post by laughing_man » Mon Jul 21, 2014 3:01 pm

I looked at new Ukrainian ration by a Japanese journalist's tweet.
He got the ration from the Ukraine army soldier.

And I found the news about new Ukrainian ration in youtube.
Although I did not understand Ukrainian, as for it, I looked like introduction of Ukrainian ration, and the dissatisfaction to MRE.

Can someone interpret this video?

i have checked around with my friends in the norwegian army, they say that the
ukranian army didnt enjoy the rations they have recived from other nations
as aid help.so now they are packing theyre own rations with comercial food items
more palateble for the ukrainian troops.

side note to this:ukraina are preparing for war.....
another side note: many and i mean many many cases of mres and mcw and other nations
food aid have been sold on the black market and are under investigation....

What kind of dissatisfaction do Ukrainians have in the ration of other countries?
Is Ukrainian ration so delicious?

I don't think is "national pride", I concur with Ken. Ukraine is prepping herself for war and they need a steady supply line to feed their troops. They can't depend on shipment of rations from other countries. they need their rations to be local.
That's my humble opinion...

OK, understanding Russian and Polish i had no problem in understanding this video.

To answer your questions: the problem Ukrainians have with MRE is that it is highly processed food with lots of chemical preservatives, and they prefer more traditional conserved food. "Dog test" is being used to advertise ukrainian army food against MRE as more natural.

Also the choice of menu is different to what Ukrainian troops enjoy. Local products are used instead: buckwheat with pork etc.

I had an impression that this video was made to convince general public, that their troops are getting the best available food possible.

Looks like an interesting story, too bad there's not a translation... Personally, I'd rather take the Chicken Fajitas over whatever was in that can  but I guess if it's something you grew up with it would obviously be your preference. Did it say in the story whether the military was selling the donated MREs? The bits I'd heard before made it sound like that was being done "under the table" on the black market, as though they had been stolen or intercepted somehow before getting to their intended destination.

If things get ugly (I sincerely hope they do not) and supply lines thin out, someone (soldier, civilian or otherwise) would probably be glad to have those US MREs.

Yes, they say that american MRE's have been spotted on internet marketplace for 120 hryvna (ca. 10 USD) each - which is damn expensive for Ukraine. My impression is that this is not a widespread corruption scheme or sth - just someone sold few MRE's he got on the internet asking high prices for them, but i may be wrong. Also keep in mind that this video was made in the end of may. I was trying to find MRE's for sale on ukrainian website now, but found nothing.

Different countries, different food cultures. If somebody issued our troops rations that contained a lot of mutton, squid, or fermented bean curd, they'd sure "prefer" their own, too. I haven't the foggiest idea what Ukrainian folks eat, but I'd bet it's not a whole lot like what we eat. And that's the whole thing in a nutshell.

Besides, they ARE soldiers, and it is the finest and most ancient tradition to bitch about the chow.
