I do many winter water trips and really enjoy hearty hot meal at day's end.
Ordered some HRD Bean salad meals on line for that purpose. (2010 production?)
A hot filling cold weather meal that I could combine SPAM or some other MRE meat entree.
I will say it is a high calorie filling meal. But they used a very sweet sauce as a flavor. I ended up mixing it with the Chicken and salsa. In the end I had bad mix of spices. Where they could have just left the 5 beans in Natural juices with salt and pepper and allow the troop to season of mix other entrees with. The Cornbread side dish was a good addition. But I wish they had left the beans plain. Best I can say is it will fill you up alone I included a few shots of my bleak camp site

Re: Bean Salad review
Norton, I really like and enjoy your outdoor/bushcraft pictures and I envy you for the environment and possibilities you have.
I never had a HDR entree yet, all I knew about is from reviews. Most "complaints" were, they are bland in taste.

Re: Bean Salad review
They are ok. As Olli states their flavor is kind of bland specially for people like us that are used to have some kind of meat with our meals.
They are very filling. most of the main meals of the HDR's are mostly bean/legume based ( lentils, beans etc.) plus rice and barley. All of the sides are mostly crackers and plenty of peanut butter.
We have to remember it was designed for humanitarian use in places that have dietary restrictions. :mrgreen:v

When I selected this meal, I thought it would be bland. My intention was to use it as a high calorie base and add either meat or cheese packets to add even more value for cold weather use.Bypah wrote:They are ok. I was surprised by the sweet BBQ type sauce they used.
