Very cool review and great pics, N_n_f! I'm not sure where it says this on the MREInfo site, but one common thing that happens with very old chocolate is that as it dries out, it tends to change appearance from the drying up of the milk and other ingredients. When my national guard unit was still being issued with MCIs, it was very common for the chocolate and toffee discs to have a similar appearance to the chocolate ration you reviewed. And yes, as with many rations it is highly advised to drink alot of water to aid in proper bodily processing!  Although the Italian ration designers seem to have a good idea, knowing that several days of their rations is not the best thing for the body, they do provide those large "tablets".....

I'm wondering if the drink mixes in your PR1M felt a bit clumped together like mine does, when I opened one of the drink mix packages it appears as if moisture has gotten inside, but looks similar to yours. The granules aren't loose and are sticky. Was that the case with your drink mix? Did you feel ill after drinking them?
This is moisture getting in. Nothing to worry about unless it obvious the packet has been soaked in something.

The process to create drink mixed is much like freeze-drying, the item that goes through the process becomes super hydrophilic, sucking moisture from anything it can, even the air.

If there is no 02 absorber in the ration then its usually the drink mix that takes the hit for the team. Coffee usually goes before fruity flavored mixed packs.

Enjoy it
Hmm this is slightly worrying. I haven't gotten sick from it yet, when I received my ration the tube of jam had been punctured and leaked everywhere. It caused the rolls of candies to mold on each end. Otherwise everything else appears fine.

Speaking of coffee, do you know how much water to add to the instant coffee and chocolate drink powder? I can't seem to find any instructions for them.

You should be ok with the drink mixes, i meant more oil/fuel that kind of spill will ruin it.

As long as you dont see mold the jam on the outside is no big deal.

Stat with 8oz, add more if you need. Coffee is generally 1 cup per packet

Thanks!

One more question for you, what kind of tea is in the tea bags?
