Re: Underground oddities
Thanks for the links guys, really cool stuff! Here in new england, especially in western MA where I am there are all kinds of current and former AT&T and other cold war bunkers and related sites, but most of the AT&T stuff is not accessible to the public. Here are a few links you may find interesting as well; http://coldwar-c4i.net http://coldwar-ma.com

Those sites are great! I'm a big fan of modern archaeological exploration too. Out here in Montana I've found a few old ghost towns and mines, but when I lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania I definitely got out more. There were factories, train tunnels, an oil refinery's main depot, tons of amazing structures from the centennial world's fair in 1876, and don't get me started on rooftops - getting on top of tall buildings around town was always a good time too. About a 40 minute drive outside of Philly a few friends and I explored the abandoned Pennhurst Mental Asylum. These days a group has permission to conduct tours a few weekends a year, but when I was going there it was technically trespassing. On one occasion we camped in one of the buildings on the site. There were 20+ large buildings and the asylum had a population of over 5000 at it's peak. There's even an abandoned power plant on site since it was rather remote when it was originally built.
I have a ton of pictures somewhere in a box, if they were digital or if I had a scanner I'd put some up here. The very first time I got into the place with two of my friends we had been hiking in for half an hour or so and at the time all of the doors on the buildings were boarded up and/or chained shut except for a few secret entrances. I had spoken to a local that used to work there and was told to find the playground behind the administration building and go through the woods behind that where I found the hatch going into one of the two main tunnel systems throughout the complex. As soon as I got down inside and turned on my lights I was greeted by graffiti saying "Welcome To The Gates of Hell" - definitely an eery start to that two day trip through the past.

There are quite a few places here in western MA that were former SAC weapons sites and comms, both AT&T and military. Unfortunately when AT&T "de-activated" the AUTOVON comms system, they either tore out the buildings that we'd see in the woods or else they'd pour cement down the vertical shaft cable access in the buildings so no way to explore them. Another interesting thing I've seen around my area lately is people using audio and video equipment to record EVPs and other paranormal activity at some of the old state hospitals and even a couple cold war sites. All in all, pretty amazing what you can find on back roads and remote areas out here.
