51 yr old emergency crackers (NL)

Post by Nawt » Sat Dec 08, 2012 4:41 pm

Hi guys

I wanted to share these with you.

awhile ago I managed to dig up some additional 'emergency biscuits' / crackers tin's from 1961 and '62.
the tin is from dec. 61. so I figured I would celebrate that by eating some :D .

I opened up the tin in the poorest shape, also since it was the only one missing the actual opener , which normally is attached to the lid. Since the date is hardly visible I have a 1962 tin next to it.

By openeing it give a big ssssst ( so vacuum was OK). Crackers were still crunchy and smelled like there were supposed to I guess (probably not quite but ok), But tasted really plain. Some spread would help consuming the whole lot of 72 biscuits.
oh, and a gallon of water ;)

Here's the pic's:

A very cool find, Nawt! They remind me of the Civil Defense crackers that were stocked in the fallout shelters and AT&T and Western Union bunkers in the 1960s. I've seen them at flea markets and surplus stores sold as cold war souvenirs and not for consumption. If I recall correctly what my uncles described, there were saltine-tasting crackers and graham cracker types as well. I will say you are very courageous for tasting them, not sure I'd be able to.

Hi guys, thank's for the comments!

I'm ok still, joehoe!
After I ate a bunch of biscuits last night before I went out ( the go well bith beer, I only had to pie once  ), this morning my breakfast excisted partly of crackers as well.

The tin's are ( to my knowledge) intended 'for' civil defense indeed. And that's about it for as far as my info goes.
There's very little information available about these and I have only seen 'm with production dates 1961 and 1962.
I'll post some more pic's with different production month's as well as Army rations from the same producer
and time era for comparison.

keep on munching!

Nawt.
