SPICE CAKE WITH VANILLA CRUMB Date of Pack July 2, 1999

Post by mreheater72 » Sat Jul 30, 2011 2:22 pm

Hi guys,

today I "decided" to open an "vintage" tray ration "SPICE CAKE WITH VANILLA CRUMB" Date of Pack July 2, 1999. The metal tray has some massive dents and rust, but the container had no holes and so was dense :D .

I took a series of photos:

Lid of the metal tray

Bottom side of the metal container with massive dents (tank? ) and rust

Side face of the tray ration with massive dents

Date code 9183 means July 2, 1999, about 12 years old

The opened (with P38) tray ration, the cake smells and looks very fine, the inner surface of the metal container was absolutely ok

Close-up of the spice cake, the vanilla crumb can be seen clearly

The cake cut in 18 portions, referring to "instructions" 3 rows by 6 rows

Now the taste test: The cake was moist, the taste typical US ration cake: Very fine, even 12 years after baking :D :D !

So long mreheater72

I realy *love* this tray rations and spice cake (Gewürzkuchen) with vanillacrumbs is one of my favourits! Once Mrs. Housil started to bake me MRE cakes at home like the lemon poppy cake. :D

I just had a smoked pulled pork sandwich and I am beginning to think Hagen had a better meal! :D

Housil, did your wife warm the MRE cakes or did she make her own cakes that look like MRE cakes?

Yes! I remember those spice cakes. I had about 6 at once and gave them all away a few years back... Wish I would have kept them now!

Housil -

I think I gained 40 pounds looking at your cakes! And are those waffles I see stacked next to them :?:

A family friend of mine was born in America but her parents were born and raised in Germany. Her mother has since passed away but when I was a kid about 30 years ago her mother would bake home made German Black Forest Cherry cake! Not the stuff in a box, but REAL home made from scratch. It was the best tasting cake I have ever had! :D :D

If you ever open one of those cakes for a birthday and need a candle, let me know. I have an extra road flare

Hope you and family had a great weekend!

YUM-YUM-YUM!!!

So.... Housil.... I am thinking I will find a large MRE pouch, empty the contents, wash it out and send it to you the next time Mrs Housil makes the cake. Maybe you can put a slice in the bag and reseal it.

I see you have only a "couple" waffles  8)
