NKPA Rations
Just curious if anyone knows what the North Korean People's Army issues to their troops for rations. I was thinking maybe the Chinese were helping them out, but with what is going on these days over there, the Chinese seem to be keeping out of it so who knows?

Rationtin440,
That theory might be plausible, the Chinese do have a considerable amount of material and machines with the NKPA based on Soviet/Sino design. I think any type of ration would be similar to China and their field rations. Surprising I too can not find anything of NKPA rations or their feeding system.

Japanese-made canned food was found from the spy ship of North Korea which fought with Japan MSDF (Navy) and self-blasted.

Re: NKPA Rations
From what I've seen on North Korean Rations, it would appear that a battle ration isn't something they've thought of.

Although I'm sure if they needed to assemble something, they'd just throw together a bunch of civilian canned food in canvas sacks and be on their way.

Re: NKPA Rations
I think the NK situation is far far worse than we are imagining. I very much doubt there are even civilian canning plants.
This was the OFFICIAL ration allocation situation before the great famine and food related disasters that began in 1995;
CEREALS (Rice, corn, barley)
Heavy workers 900 gm per day
Average consumer 700 gm
High school students 600 gm
Children and young 3-400 gm
Retirees 300 gm
The rations are collected in bulk every 15th day, from allocated distribution centres.
MEAT AND FISH
1 kilo per family allocated 2 to 3 times a year usually on the eve of public holidays.
MILK
Infants and children only, in "small amounts" not specified.
SUGAR
Was dropped from the official ration in the 1970s. Since then can anly be bought with foreign currency.
in other words only the elite gets sugar.
CABBAGE, PICKLED VEGETABLES (INC RADISH) SOY SAUCE, OTHER SUNDRY ITEMS
Probably issued on a 15 day cycles, as with cereals.
ALCOHOL
3 bottles of a NK spirit and 9 bottles of beer per year
This it must be remember, is the official "ideal" ration scales, formulated in the 50-60s. Now, it would probably be accurate to reduce these scales by 40-50%.
it makes the Cuban ration allocation look like very high class eating.

Re: NKPA Rations
from the Global Encylopaedia, on NKA conscript conditions;
Its better to imagine WW2 Japanese or 50s-60s VietCong or NVA items, very limited and small amounts canned or pickled or salted/dried meats and or fish, rice the vast bulk of the ration, and tiny amounts of pickled vegetable, condiments.
Their elite units and SFs probably have limited stocks of contemporary Chinese field ration items that they are issued with for battle only.
Its probably best not to think of pre packed ration units or items issued to the vast bulk of the DPRNKA at all.The quality of life for the enlisted soldier is difficult to evaluate. Conditions are harsh, rations are 650-750 gms a day (80-90% of the ROK army ration) depending on branch of service..
In addition, soldiers perform duties not related to their mission. Units are expected to grow crops and to raise livestock or fish to supplement their rations

lol, the only elite units NK has are Kim Jong Il's praetorian guards. They probably get a bit more food so they can better protect him.biscuits brown wrote:from the Global Encylopaedia, on NKA conscript conditions;
