Sour is good on this side of the pond. :D
Aside from that, did you like it? Maybe milk would have been better?

The Norwegian freezedried are great!
They are design to be made with water on purpose, you don´t have milk in the fields.

there's already powdered milk in them.. so no need for milk.
I also think the drytech freezedrieds are the best freezedrieds. The vacuum packing also makes it a very good meal for when you need to carry your food..

I don't have that much experience with the breakfasts, but the ones that I had where good (oatmeal and the one with berries, also from Norge)

The mean meals have an nice texture compared to travellunch, adventure foods and others. The DryTech entrees are also one of the few brands that don't over do it on the salt part. Most freezedrieds tend to put to much salt in meals. (I like salt though, but most people don't)

I do have to say, I don't have any experience with the US freezedry brands.. but I've seen some nice looking meals from there aswell..

Drytech meals don't look pretty when prepared.. but the taste is extremely good for freezedry standards.

But they'll have to beat me to death with it because it's empty.

You should give Mountain House a try some day, you will *never* eat any European (except DryTech!).

housil you mentioned no milk in the field, so I guess that means that the Bundeswehr does not have the "shelf stable" crap that the U.S. Army has used for years? Sounds to me like the Bundeswehr cares more about it's soldiers than the U.S. Army does! lol.

The Bundeswehr also does/did a lot with fieldkitchens and bringing warm food into the field. That's also the reason I think, why there isn't so much variety in EPAs.

This means however, when they're using the EPA, they are away from their normal "fresh" sources. So shelfstable milk isn't available either.

By the way.. I wouldn't even want milk in the field.. Even shelfstable milk will spoil quite fast when opened especially with hot weather. Plus it would make the supply chain more complicated if you have to transport milk and water. If you put powdered milk in all "dairy needing" products, you will only have to get water. Plus, you can use water for everything. So if you get 2 containers with water, and one get's blown to smithereens, the second one is still functional.

If you get one with water and milk.. and the one with water get's destroyed.. goodluck with washing, cleaning your mess gear, drinking with hot weather, eating your freezedry entrees etc etc ;)

Here they used to have cans of condensed milk.. but they were dropped after a while due to problems in the field with spoiling under warm weather, cans opening with extreme low temperatures etc. (They were of the type "paint can" with the lift of and push to close lids)

I stand corrected with my milk comment. Thanks.
I brought the milk up because the cereal was not being eaten in a combat situation, but rather in a civilian situation, where milk would be available... and this bring sup another question for everyone who reads this....
I have eaten several varieties of MREs but I've never worried too much about how I eat them. I've used the heater for some, eaten some cold and boiled some inw ater on my kitchen stove. I am going to ask this question because of something else I do and was told.... I am a photographer. Last summer I bought a 90 year old camera and another photographer said to me, "Ok, you're part of the club now. You have an old camera so now you have to use old expired film too." And I do that. It keeps antique photography honest.
So my question for you guys is: now that I am involved with MREs, you guys only eat them the way soldiers do in the field or do you cook 'em at home and add what you have in the fridge/cupboards?

Stick,

Interesting question... Obviously when I eat MREs when camping, I eat them in the "in the field" way. I use the heater to heat up my main entree and side if warranted. I have yet to use the hot beverage bag tho. I typically have a small camp stove to heat up water.

When I'm at home and get a craving, I typically nuke (microwave) the entree (after removing it from the pouch) or boil the pouch in water, thus saving the FRH for later use. I don't ever add anything except what came with the MRE.

Well, we have/had other self stable "crap".
But Cracker is right, EPas are only in use, if there isn´t any other food available.
I can recall having cereals with milk with the US Army in 1982 in the fields. I liked it :D

Actually we eat them as they are, just "pimp" them sometimes with a dash of salt or some other spice.
