Thats an interesting question. Ive got quite a lot of assorted info, but almost all material is regarding US or to a lesser extent Canadian developments. There is virtually no primary source material for UK or translated German material. However there is occasional references in allied accounts of German rations, in passing.

Action and after action reports seem to be a great place to look, intelligence reports, etc.

The book has 90%+ of the Ration Report included as well as every other US Intell source I could find. We also used a number of German wartime books on Rations.We decided to leave out some of the technical evaluations. I doubt most folks would be interested in calorie count, % fat etc. I could easily post that info if anyones interested. If you do find any references on German Rations I would certainly be interested. Regards Jim

When we started the project we had to set some parameters. One of the most important was keeping the book to one volume. With the amount of info available to us, we had to balance between subjects, facts, pictures and company info. Many subjects like the field kitchen and unit structures were left out. As far as the Ration report goes, we left out the analysis of the actual products. We didn't feel it would have much value for the average collector or reenactor. Here a portion of the original ration report. In the book you get everything except for the analysis. Jim

Got my copy Friday and read it cover to cover over the weekend.

Excellent book. IMHO, it will immediately become THE standard reference work.

My only criticism, and it's a very, very minor one, is I feel there should have been a small section on reproduction rations.

Hi Donald,
We had considered doing a section devoted to reproductions but opted to integrate some of that info throughout the book. We devote a few paragraphs to the topic in our introduction. The subject if done right would have taken up a lot of pages, better used for other information. There are outright fakes to fool collectors which we show several newer examples: the Oskar Scintler Dauerbrot, Batscheider Knackebrot with Wehrmacht Packung stamp, Camembert cheese with Wehrmacht Packung stamp (we believe the carton is wartime with a postwar label), and the Quarg carton with Wehrmacht Packung stamp (we believe the carton is wartime with a postwar stamp). Then you have original items misidentified as wartime, like the Bundeswehr bread cans. The final category we didn't show pictures of, were items made for reenactors; none of them even come close to looking like wartime items. Actually the best and most accurate reproductions are those made by Tom Bock for the book. None of those items are available on the market. We clearly identified these as recreations.
