Can MRE Heaters Be Airmailed?

Post by crunchie » Thu Feb 04, 2010 2:18 pm

I would also appreciate if anyone can please tell me whether the MRE heaters used for heating up the MRE can be airmailed or would they have to go by surface mail(takes forever) if a person was doing a swap overseas.

Thanks for your help, fellows!

Crunchie,
I have successfully shipped sealed MREs (which contain heaters) from the US to Canada. I used UPS Ground due to concerns about mailing the heaters. Outside of the sealed MRE package, I'm not sure if the heaters can be mailed. It would seem that if the heaters are separate, they are more likely to get torn and wet, thus producing a lot of heat. It would also seem that loose heaters are not something that one might want traveling on an aircraft.

crunchie, I'm not sure what an acceptable way to send flameless ration heaters overseas is but via airplane is probably not an approved method. I'm sure people do it anyway but I can't and wouldn't recommend it. As Keystone mentioned, there's a chance the package could get wet (even just via humidity or moisture) and if the FRH heating element is exposed, this could lead to the heater's activation. Sure, you could make sure to seal the heaters in some kind of mositure-proof bag but I think if you still follow the letter of postal regulations, they won't let you send the FRH's via air.

With all the sh*t going on in the Obama Administration and why they can't figure who should have gotten custody of the Christmas
terrorist bomber it's best to leave them alone and not take any chances. There's an e-mail I got back from the U.S.P.S. and can be found in these forums whereby I asked them about the legality of doing this exact same thing.

If you can't find it -- I'll get the link.

KMan, maybe we could retrieve that e-mail and put it up so people can see it?

The way this administration is acting I'd highly advise against it. One guy actually tried to blow a plane out of the sky on Christmas and got a lawyer and the rights of a U.S. citizen. You would be sending FRH's and shipping them so you'd go straight to Gitmo and be called a right wing extremist. Seriously though, I wouldn't advise sending anything that is potentially combustible these days...

Regardless of which administration is in office or how recently there was a security incident with the airlines, it's never a good idea to send hazardous materials in a prohibited manner.

Why be a real lawyer when I can just play one on the forums?

As with all legal advice I offer, you get what you pay for. :-)

I googled around a little bit and found a page Transport Canada

They refer to mreinfo.com about FRH

Why not send a 2002 FRH:
