Tasters Choice instant is OK for the purpose, but it sucks. Bring back the old GI foil packs of coffee, or at least, Folgers or Yuban instant. Even Maxwell House is better than Tasters Choice.
After the Chicken and the Egg, came the "Omelet"!
Re: Heater Meals Coffee
All instant coffee sucks really. No offence intended, but if you're into proper coffee, there seems to be only so much you can do with dehydrated granules (this goes for the instant tea sachets also), and a percolator or coffee machine isn't going to be too handy in the field. Although I did once work with a matelot who insisted on bringing such proper coffee paraphernalia to sea with him, taking up half his (tiny) locker space it seemed!
Nonetheless theres one instant coffee brand that kinda hits the spot for me, the one my parents have at the family home (they don't bother with a plunger type cafetiere, more into their tea). Will have to try and get the name of it, its the best instant coffee I have tasted.
I am much more a fan of the hot chocolate out of ratpacks than coffee or tea or whatever. In fact the only time the brew kit and soup out of 24hr ratpacks (and the pudding) don't get binned and make it into the field with me is when its unreasonably cold or there is going to be a very high amount of calories burnt that are going to need replacing (for both of those conditions, read 'mountains'). Half a mug of hot choc with breakfast, and another half mug at supper, shared with your battle/basha buddy, seems to do fine unless its freezing, and if it is freezing get yourself one of those little thermal flask/mugs, its enough to keep an extra brew warm til round about lunch time for you.
Cheers

Better yet, try Nescafe Classico, or as it's known in Britain, Nescafe Gold !

Re: Heater Meals Coffee
Our local Publix Supermarket has a small British section that carries the Nescafe Gold. I am going to pick up some tomorrow and give it a try.
Mostly, I am assuming that I will just be paying a premium for Taster's Choice imported from the UK, but what the Hell? Life should be an adventure!

You can pick your friends
and you can pick your nose
but you can't roll your friends into little green balls!

In the States, just get some Nescafe Classico, same stuff, different label, probably cheaper.
Here in California, it's in every store. If not, try a Mexican market.
I think you will be surprised, I know I was!
