Does anyone miss old skool rations?

Post by britman » Thu Oct 08, 2009 8:44 am

Now I know that it's all in the name of progress, and I'm very glad that someone is putting the effort in and looking at new foods for us and all,

But I cannot help having nostalgia for the older type of rations!

Got issued ORP (Brit 24hr rations) just recently and they have done away with Screech! Now its Lucozade powder :( I've got to say I preffered the screech!

Also the pate has been replaced with pastes from Princes, or even a can of mushroom paste if you're unlucky. Whilst the old pate wasn't amazing (had to turn it upside down to drain the grease from it first!) it was preferable to this new ham & beef paste, and whats a guy who detests tuna to do? :P

However, kudos on whoever decided to include the strawberry jam paste, vegemite, tabasco, New Zealander dried fruit pieces and golden oats bar and the random chocolate bar in a colourful wrapper from Italy, nomnomnom! :D

I guess the rations aren't actually bad - I just miss the ones I grew up on - does anyone remember Duncans chocolate before the Yorkies? And anyone remember the cans of spinach instead of pate you used to get for awhile? Good stuff

So sound off about your own favoured old school rations and how the kids of today don't know what they're missing 8)

I miss any of the ol' C-rations  .Back in the 80's I used to get them from family members that were in the military.
They were good specially the PB and J with the round crackers and for the sweet tooth the famous chocolate disks.
For me any c-rat was good...I miss them
Peace!

I miss SOME of the old C's. Especially the round chocolate toffee disks that came in the B1 units. And somehow, the new squeeze PB just doesn't make good Ranger Fudge - especially with no round cracker to put it on.

For a while in the mid-80's we were issued both C's & MREs. I would save the pound cake from the C's, rehydrate the freeze-dried strawberries from the MREs, and with some sugar & creamer packets, come up with a pretty decent field-expedient Strawberry Shortcake.

Having eaten my share of them back in the day, I can't say as I miss any of them. But they were still better than the local fare and I still haven't acquired a stomach for Vietnamese food.
