Norwegian Royal Thai

Post by housil » Thu Jul 30, 2009 12:49 pm

Today I had for lunch:

Norwegian "Royal Thai"

Fish with a freeze dried ration
Image
let´s see...

The bag contained:
Image
Chocolate, crackers, liverpate, coffee, cocoa beverage, chewing gum, moist towel and the pouch

You can see the rice, the fish and the instant sauce
Image

After pouring hot water up to the filling line (you don´t have to estimate the amount of water  )
Image
well stiring and let it soak for 5min

There was a place in the corner of the pouch where I didn´t stirred well I guess...

The dish itself was ab-so-lut-ly delicious to me! Very "creamy" sauce like a risotto, very tasty and spicy but not too hot flavour. The fish pieces had a little bit "rubber like" texture, but that was not this worse to me.

The Norwegians are the best freeze dried dishes I ever had. I´ve you had one, you will never eat e.g. a German EPa leicht freeze dried dish. They are tasteless compared to them

The chunk of not properly stirred powder was probably in a corner, it's quite hard to stir it properly..
There are some nice dishes with travellunch aswell though, but I'm not a fish fan.

And it's probably all a mental thingy, but are the canned meals like in the older rations more nutritional? Or is that just something in my mind? (they seeme to fill better..)
Sure, someone may one day kill me with my own gun.
But they'll have to beat me to death with it because it's empty.

That´s what I said before too, in a corner...

Travellunch is German Bundeswehr EPa leicht. Once you had a Norwegian one, you will never mentioned Travellunch...

I´m also not a fish "fan", I just gave it a try and was agreeably surprised about the taste

Yep, I ment that they also have quite good meals, but I prefer MRE meals and cans over dried food ;)

But the "ready-to-eat" meals (MRE or cans) are almost always of better taste and texture, the only problem is that it packs a lot more space
(that it saves weight is simply a sales lie.. unless you used chemically purified water on location.. :( not a fan of purified water aswell.. the chlore is quite bad if you use it regularly)

I don't have any experience with the norwegians jet, but I like and dislike some travellunch meals..
Actually the only ones I like are the things like jägertopf, zigeunertopf, serbische reistopf, the chickenrisotto and the nudeln bolognese.. there some others that are "edible" but only when your hungry..

But it's quite a drama to boil water, and then poring it in a bag, en then mixing it especially when your fingers are numb because of cold weather.. I especially like the MRE frh meals..they are nice and thin, easy to store, and only need a minimum of fresh water :D

You push at an open door...

I allways "complained" you have to get water from somewhere (e.g. melt snow), have to heat it up - maybe on a ESBIT cooker etc...
The only advantage on hand is the prolonged shelf live of freeze dried stuff compared to any ready to eat meals. They have theoretical an unlimited shelf live as the powder can´t spoil for the lack of any "water". Bacteria, mold etc. need any "moisture" to live.

Next thing is, you can´t eat the powder if you are our of water

Same as the Dutch army.. they had the brilliant idea to issue the bags (like the british) without flamesless ration heaters.. you have to put it in a messtine and boil water underneeth.. :( drama.. I tell you..

The shelf life is a pro, but they have a legal shelf life of max 3 years (in the netherlands)..
And the military doesn't keep it longer..

I prefer canned meals (nice portion and taste, easy to heat)

I had a prototype self heating meal a long long while ago (5 years?) with canned rations, with a flameless heater in the bottom.. just remove a plastic stick on the bottom (safety thingy so it doesn't crack on transport) and push the bottom hard untill it clicks..

The disadvantage was that they were prone to "cook" before you wanted them to.. (on transport.. backpack.. etc)
And they didn't heat good enough when it was could.. I got it from a friend of mine (I was just a kid)

Never heard of them since.. never issued.. but if they would've worked, they would've been the perfect thing

Liverpate & crackers from the ration

Last time the crackers were softend from the humidity

now they are broken => not soften :D

Texture of liverpate, like common liverpate
Image
and a very "creamy" taste :D

You realy have to love rations to eat:

Ehm.. crackers and spread is my favorite in most rations (except for the MRE.. because I'm allergic to peanuts and really dislike the cheesespread   )

It's very easy to eat, and all crackers (hartkeks, wheatcrackers like the dutch/british, MRE etc etc) fill you up, like you're eating concrete bricks.. It's also the easiest to simply dip the cracker in the spread instead of smearing it on (saves you a dirty knife or spoon in your gear) and it's a lot faster :D
