I've been waiting to hear an explanation of that myself. Here is my favorite write-up so far. It's from http://www.prowrestling.com/article/news/12713 :

Whats a slim jim? some kind of candy? You hear of them on TV and films but I have no idea what they are.
Yeah what could cause a food plant to expode... I would quite like to know that too.

Just for the record, it turns out that there was a natural gas leak located in a room where pumps produce the vacuum for packing the Slim Jims.

my condolences to the families of those that perished in the explosion...

that being said - it seems that slim jims had the same affect on the factory as it does the intestinal tract...
