Don´t hesitate! They are this hard on purpose. It´s a real compressed, pretty sweet, emergency (!) ration. Like an oatmeal bar.

Hmm the Foodstuff itself looks exactly like the "emergency rations" you get in life rafts, compressed slightly sweet tasting , almost like ice cream wafers......
if that makes any sense :)
I came, I saw, I ate some rations then fell asleep amongst the clover.
