Hello all, I've been lurking here for a bit and figured it was time to join, now that I have something to contribute.
Anyway, I'm looking to reproduce some NVA (National People's Army) rations for a re-enactment this Spring. Specifically I need to have edible field rations; the equivalent to K-rations, MREs... individual sort if possible. (although group rations would be cool too)
And I was hoping that some of you could help me make them as accurate as possible.
I know that most of the contents were off the shelf items, which is good since I can buy canned meats and such.
I also know that there were several different types and categories, and this is where I need help.
I'm looking for contents lists, pictures or descriptions of labels, and pictures of the items themselves.
But I'll take any info or stories you have to offer.
I plan to relabel the cans (when possible) and create and label the cardboard boxes that group rations came in.
This in combination with the right contents (or very close substitutions) should make something close enough for eating.
The plan is not to make exact replicas per say, since I'm not trying to make money off these things, but rather have the food in my Sturmgepaeck look more realistic. Taste will vary from the originals since I may not be able to find the exact contents and/or manufacturing differences today will vary from the DDR plants in the 80s.
As an incentive I'll even make extra and sell them for cost to anybody from MREinfo, who helps out... and wants one! Call it a bonus for being a contributing member.
Thanks in advance,
Repro NVA rations

Hello,
we are several Germans over here and can give you all support we have.
There are almost no information available about the NVA rations as the DDR felt apart in 1990. The (comministic) companies, making them, former called VEB (Volkseigener Betrieb) went out of business. They used civil manufactured can´s with a shelf life (must be used until! Not best before!) of less than 2 years.

e.g. canned bread, former manufacturer Grossbäckerei Pasewalk,->see can here<- now called http://www.schaefers-brot.de/

etc.
See our members katojapan flop with his genuine (rotten) NVA ration box at the ->video topic<-.
->This pictures here<- are perfect for you!
Thats a NVA K-Portion:

Re: Repro NVA rations
Excellent pictures.
And more pictures to add to the archive.
As for me, hmm location: Central America.
And yes I plan to use these at Eastwind, but I realized while walking this path, to NVA rations, that other people might want them too. Or at least know more about them.
So I'm putting these up on Flickr (slowly) for future refernce. And should be able to write up something on how the NVA made them, and how I made them so others can do the same if they want.

Sorry housil, I don't have pics of these. As I said It was a repro I got on ebay couple of months ago. It has many items simulating a German Red Cross package of WWII ("Deutsches Rotes Kreuz fur the Wermacht soldaten"). The person even put some nazi propaganda in a package of matches to simulate a WWII german matchbox. But it has items that are new civilian stuff, like the zweiback biscuits, couple of cans of german tuna and sardines, a package of "VIVIL" spearmint candies...yummmmm! a toothpaste like tube of "Sahne Meerrettich":?:housil wrote:Can´t see the pictures...Bypah wrote:I have some german repros...(WWII Deutsches Rot Creuze/German Red Cross Rats...) all with real german products including a pack of german smokes.....![]()

But the "piece de resistance" is the package of smokes....a sealed pack of 17 "Roth-Haendle" cigaretten with the tax seal and everything. People have asked me to sell it...they offered me $ 20 bucks...and I said no.....
Well here it is a written pic of the items...hope it helps

I assume " raspberry",orange, * is some type of a herb used to flavor wines...(woodruff?) and "lemon/lime"...
