The gas wars were in California, in 1971, good times !
During the yom Kippur war, (1973) I was in the Mediteranean, on a Patrol Gunboat, shadowing soviet warships and freighters taking Russian equipment to Syria and egypt. Dozens of Russians, loaded with tanks and trucks, and only one freighter taking stuff to Israel.
It was running at night, no lights, name painted over, and had several F-4 phantoms on deck, still painted with U.S. markings...
My ship was homeported in Naples (Napoli) Italy, But I was seldom home...
Gas was rationed, we had coupons and paid $0.50 per gallon. The US government paid the rest.
Locals were paying about $ 2.85 per, as I recall.
Mind you, I was only making about $ 400 a month then...
